Colorado coach Jared Bednar challenged the play, and video replays appeared to show Toews was offside before he later scored, but officials upheld the call after a lengthy review and the Blackhawks were within 3-2.
“I don’t necessarily understand it, but it’s a tag-up rule,” Avalanche coach Jared Bednar said. “It wasn’t on his stick. That is what it is. For me, it’s 3-2, nine-and-a-half minutes to go, that gives them a little life. It’s what we do after that that bothers me.”
Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville said, “I thought it was the right call. It doesn’t trigger the offside until he touches the puck. Johnny (Toews) gets his skate back on time, right at probably the same time as we touch it. You can say it was a tie. That’s the Minnesota play.”
Quenneville was referring to a similar play in the Blackhawks’ 4-3 overtime win over the Wild on Feb 8. In that game, Quenneville used his coach’s challenge after J.P. Parise scored in the second period for the Wild, arguing that Parise was offside on the sequence leading to the goal. After a long review, officials said the evidence was inconclusive and let the goal stand.
