"Convince a man against his will, He's of the same opinion still."

damndogrevenge

Why is this guy being harassed for his choice. Isn't Pride about choice?

bivdamndogrevenge

I suppose the reply here is that being LGBT is not a choice.

But they are absolutely focusing on the wrong thing. Why focus on the one person who dissents as opposed to celebrating the night and the outpouring of support? Simply, if even one person dissents, then they can continue to claim to be victims.

MZ2215damndogrevenge

It's been really interesting to watch the movement evolve over the years from "we just want to be accepted and treated equally" to "you'll wear our colors or you're a piece of shit"

MurrayChadwick

LeBum doesn't respect religion hiding behind his twitter account. See how that cuts both ways?

bezukov

Provorovs employer chose to make an inclusive gesture towards a social minority group.  He chose not to participate.  The Flyers didnt force him to participate, nor does it seem they retaliated.  His immediate supervisors and coworkers have given him space publicly to make his own choice.  He could have asked for a sick day to skip the publicity.  He didnt.  So big deal if he has to answer a few questions about it.  That was his choice too, and hes been pretty well accommodated for having made it.  I dont think theres any need for sympathy here.

MurrayChadwickbezukov

Offering sympathy? Interesting way to look at the reactions both here and elsewhere.

I would say I'm seeing more either anger, or stick taps for him not participating in something he didn't want to participate in.

bezukovMurrayChadwick

By sympathy I mean the suggestion that Provorov was wronged by virtue of being questioned.

MZ2215bezukov

I haven't seen anyone upset about him being asked why he didn't participate and have no problem with the question being asked.

My issue lies with the Greg Wyshynski's of the hockey media world and this new wave of alphabet mafia NHL groupies having absolute meltdowns calling for a player to be benched for the game, waived from the team and blacklisted by the league. You'd think he burned a pride flag at center ice if you just opened up twitter. Keep forcing your beliefs, that's definitely the best way to express how imporant diversity, inclusion, and tolerance is to you. "Support our message or we'll make you a pariah" is a helluva pitch.

bezukovMZ2215

Ok, two things here.

1.) In this very thread the questioning has been characterized as harassment.

2.) No one has been forced. Provorov wasnt forced.  He was allowed to skip the exercise.   Lets drop the hyperbole.

Staples nailed it.

The NHL is trying really hard to go down the same road as the NFL and NBA, except it's a dead end you can never get out of.

godblender

Well one thing is certain: everyone who has Provorov's back here definitely applauded Colin Kaepernick when he chose to knell for the anthem in protest of police brutality. Right???

MurrayChadwickgodblender

Is opting not to participate, the same as gesturing the entire warmup in a way that would upset some fans, or wearing hockey socks depicting LGBT community in a derogatory fashion?  One of these things is not like the other...

A better comparable are the many NFL players that simply decided not to be on the field for the anthem on both sides of that issue, when they all stood and all knelt, and frankly, I don't even know who they were or are, as that was their choice, to me, they are actually comparable, not Kaepernick.

That said, both athletes are free to do what they want.

damndogrevengegodblender

Pretty broad assertion you made there. Just to clear the air, i have zero issue with Colin Kaepernick kneeling. I respect his right to free speech and the awareness is was trying to raise. Respect has to go both ways. A one way street is just an avenue to another forced myopic view. The people of this country are allowing themselves to be torn apart from one another over ideologies. Very sad. Especially when people attack instead of trying to communicate like a true sentient being.

BTW, I am not an nfl fan, i have not watched a Superbowl since 95. The NFL is like McDonald's: crap for the masses.

Wingdinggodblender

Yes he definitely had the right. I 100% disagreed with him.

In the end, I quit watching the NFL because there was too much messaging, and not enough tackling.

from Sportsnet,

The NHL released a statement Wednesday in response to Philadelphia Flyers defenceman Ivan Provorov's decision to skip warmups on Pride Night Tuesday, stating that "players are free to decide which initiatives to support."

Hockey is for everyone is the umbrella initiative under which the League encourages Clubs to celebrate the diversity that exists in their respective markets, and to work to achieve more welcoming and inclusive environments for all fans," the league said in the statement obtained by Sportsnet.

"Clubs decide whom to celebrate, when and how with League counsel and support. Players are free to decide which initiatives to support, and we continue to encourage their voices and perspectives on social and cultural issues.

rovorov cited his Russian Orthodox religion as the reason he did not participate in the warmups, where the team wore Pride-themed jerseys and used sticks wrapped in rainbow Pride tape in celebration and support of the LGBTQ+ community before a 5-2 victory over the Anaheim Ducks.

The 26-year-old played nearly 23 minutes in the game.

I respect everybody's choices, Provorov said after the game. My choice is to stay true to myself and my religion. That's all I'm going to say.

Provorov declined to answer follow-up questions about his decision.

Flyers coach John Tortorella said Provorov was true to himself and to his religion.

Its one thing I respect about Provy, hes always true to himself, Tortorella said.

There is more from Miller in his recent timeline.

This happened last week and although I did not post it, today may be the day to do so.

via Ben Nagle at The Daily Mail,

The NHL has backtracked after Florida governor Ron DeSantis was among the critics of their job fair in Fort Lauderdale next month, labelling it 'discriminatory' after an advert excluded certain groups of people from attending.

The National Hockey League had scheduled an event titled 'Pathway to Hockey Summit' on February 2, in a bid to help 'diverse job seekers who are pursuing careers in hockey'.

In a now-deleted post on LinkedIn, it was revealed that the event was open to 'participants aged 18 or over, based in the US, who identify as female, Black, Asian/Pacific Islander, Hispanic/Latino, Indigenous, LGBTQIA+, and/or a person with a disability.'

In a statement, his press secretary Bryan Griffin said: 'Discrimination of any sort is not welcome in the state of Florida, and we do not abide by the woke notion that discrimination should be overlooked if applied in a politically popular manner or against a politically unpopular demographic.

'We are fighting all discrimination in our schools and our workplaces, and we will fight it in publicly accessible places of meeting or activity.'

He added that the NHL should 'immediately remove and denounce the discriminatory prohibitions it has imposed on attendance to the 2023 "Pathway to Hockey" summit.'

In a statement to Fox News, the NHL said 'the original wording of the LinkedIn post associated with the event was not accurate.'

The league then added: '"The Pathway to Hockey Summit" is an informational and networking event designed to encourage all individuals to consider a career in our game and, in particular, alert those who might not be familiar with hockey to the opportunities it offers.'
