The Ongoing Saga Of Max Pacioretty And The Canadiens

09/06/2018 at 8:22am EDT

from Stu Cowan of the Montreal Gazette,

Tony Marinaro of TSN 690 Radio described the relationship perfectly when he said it’s like a divorce where one person is still in love and wants to stay married and the other has lost that loving feeling and only wants to move on. Pacioretty loves everything about playing in Montreal — where he lives year-round with his family — but Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin wants a divorce.

It’s getting very ugly.

Bergevin worked out a trade at the NHL Entry Draft in June that would have sent Pacioretty, 29, to Los Angeles, but it fell apart when he refused to sign a long-term contract extension with the Kings. A source close to Pacioretty confirmed Wednesday that he will not negotiate a contract extension with the Canadiens or any other team after the NHL season begins on Oct. 3 and he can become an unrestricted free agent next summer. Bergevin, who has not made a contract offer to his captain, has painted himself into a corner and an upset Pacioretty has no reason to make the GM’s job any easier.

Bergevin stuck a knife in his captain’s back at the end of last season when he said attitude was the team’s biggest problem. Somehow, I thought P.K. Subban was supposed to have been the problem … or maybe it was Michel Therrien? The former defenceman and coach are gone, but there is still a problem and Pacioretty seems to have become the latest scapegoat.
