The uneven officiating in this one did not exactly even out. There was a mighty questionable roughing call against Brian Boyle that created the power play on which Tomas Plekanec gave the Habs a 1-0 lead at 16:34 of the second period off a brilliant five-man play.

There was a bizarre interference call against Chris Kreider for not moving out of the way of a pair of Montreal players who collided at the Canadiens’ blue line and thus opened up the alley for a Derick Brassard power-play breakaway before it was whistled down at 5:37 of the third.

“The ref told me that the ice belongs to the defensemen,” Richards said, relaying the gist of his conversation with referee Dave Jackson.

“There’s nothing like that in the rule book.

“They made the call because two of their guys collided and fell.”

Then the Chris Kreider penalty.... The kid was told by the officials that it’s his fault, that it’s his responsibility to get out of the way of the defender skating backward. And, OK, while that really doesn’t make a whole lot of sense—that the offensive player isn’t allowed to stand at the blue line and not move – Kreider’s contact was incidental. The two Canadiens colliding is what caused the call to be made. Terrible call, just as Derick Brassard is breaking in from the left wing.

And finally, the kicked-in goal. To me, it was pretty much the same play as the J.T. Miller goal in Philly that got wiped out by a replay review in Toronto. I don’t think either guy intentionally kicked it in. I thought both skates were going forward and made contact with the puck. So both are either distinct kicking motions, or neither are, IMO.

Also below, is the J.T. Miller waived off goal against Philadelphia and to me, you can see the distinct kicking motion as opposed to the Alex Galchenyuk goal which was upheld as a good goal.
