Morning After Skate

Happy Halloween! Welcome to the morning after! A recap of the games from the night before and quick hit hockey news.

In Case You Missed It

Boston Bruins at Pittsburgh Penguins

It would take a little time but things would start to heat up between the two Eastern Conference rivals as Jarome Iginla returned to Pittsburgh with the Bruins after last seasons trade deadline drama.

Milan Lucic would draw the first penalty of the game when he interfered with Tanner Glass and gave the Penguins the first shot at a power play. It would be Chris Kunitz with a backhanded shot past Tuukka Rask to get things started.

As the intensity grew in the second period Sidney Crosby and Torey Krug would be called for coincidental roughing minors as they got into a scrap along the boards.

Just over a minute into the third period Patrice Bergeron would tip-in a shot from Dennis Seidenberg and tie the game at one.

Shortly after the Bergeron goal it would be Penguins Robert Bortuzzo and Burins Jordan Caron dropping the gloves.

The fight momentum swing lead to more penalties on each side before Brandon Sutter would score his first of the season to give Pittsburgh the lead.

Jussi Jokinen would give the Penguins a 3-1 lead with an unassisted goal of his own, marking his third goal of the season.

As the period counted down Jarome Iginla would put a slapshot past Marc-Andre Fleury to bring the Bruins within; however, the Penguins would hold on to their lead on home ice.

Toronto Maple Leafs at Calgary Flames

Penalties and Goals a plenty last night in Calgary as the Maple Leafs continued their road trip.

Just over a minute into the game Maple Leafs Frazer McLaren and Flames Brian McGrattan would drop the gloves to get things started.

Flames Dennis Wideman would take a slashing call and shortly after the penalty expired Joffrey Lupel would put Toronto on the scoreboard.

Late in the first Toronto would go on the penalty kill as Dave Bolland was called for slashing. It would be James van Riemsdyk with a short-handed goal to give the Maple Leafs a two-goal lead to end the first.

It would be a hard fought second period pretty literally as Calgary would see Shane O’Brien called for an instigator and a ten-minute misconduct to go with his fighting major; while Toronto would see Carter Ashton called for boarding and fighting.

After the ice had been cleared it would be Matt Stajan with his first of the season to get the Flames on the scoreboard and cut the Maple Leafs lead in half.

Starting the third with a one-goal lead it would be Mason Raymond with a backhanded shot past Karri Ramo to give the Maple Leafs a 3-1 lead.

David Jones would deflect a shot and bring Calgary back within one nearing the final quarter of the period. It would be a penalty to David Clarkson at the 17-minute mark that would lead to Toronto’s second short-handed goal of the game as Paul Ranger put in an unassessed empty neat goal to secure the Maple Leafs road win.

Detroit Red Wings at Vancouver Canucks

In a game that started in a tit for tat game between Dan Hamhuis being called for holding Todd Bertuzzi; only to see Todd Bertuzzi get called after the penalty expired for slashing Dan Hamhuis it would be Daniel Sedin to get the scoring started.

Vancouver would start the second period leading Detroit before Daniel Alfredsson would tie the game putting a wrist shot past Roberto Luongo.

Late in the second period it would be Detroit’s Tomas Tatar with his first of the season as he gave the Red Wings the go-ahead goal.

Third period would see each team killing of penalties but there would be no further scoring as the Red Wings would snap a losing skid and get the win in Vancouver.

San Jose Sharks at Los Angeles Kings

Late night battle in California started with a goal by San Jose Sharks Marc-Edouard Vlassic just thirteen minutes into the game.

Not wanting to be shown up on home ice Kings’ Drew Doughty would even the score back out a few minutes later.

Midway through the first the Sharks would take the lead again with a goal from Joe Pavelski which would be followed shortly after with the Kings’ Kyle Clifford and Sharks’ Mike Brown would dropping the gloves

Second period would have Jarret Stoll re tie the game again for the Kings off of a tip-in goal.

An interference call on Kings Clifford would lead to a power play goal by Sharks Logan Couture to give the Sharks the lead again to end the second period.

At the twelve minute mark of the third period Sharks would sit James Sheppard for a too many men on the ice call that would lead to Justin Williams netting a power play goal for the Kings to tie the game at three.

Sharks would get a power play late in the third after Daniel Caracillo was called for boarding; however, unable to capitalize on the advantage the teams would head to overtime.

Less than a minute into the extra period Sharks would see Justin Braun called for hooking Jeff Carter. The ensuing power play for the Kings would have Anze Kopital net his second goal of the season to give the Kings the home ice win.
