Making his season debut forward Carl Hagelin would be the first Ranger on the boxscore – only for a slashing penalty not a goal.

Islanders Kyle Okposo would negate their power play with a penalty of his own that would see the Rangers on the power play after Hagelin’s penalty expired. Chris Kreider would take advantage of the power play and get the Rangers up by one with a snap shot past Evgeni Nabokov.

Second period would open with another penalty to Okposo only this time the Islanders would successfully kill it off. It would be Cal Clutterbuck with his first goal of the season shortly after the penalty kill to tie the game for the Islanders.

Nearing the midway point of the game Islanders Matt Martin and Rangers Derek Dorsett would drop the gloves and try to swing momentum for their respective team. It would be the Islanders with the go ahead goal before the end of the period.

Less than give minutes into the third Okopose would head back to the penalty box as the Islanders were called for too many men on the ice. With another power play the Ryan McDonagh would put a slapshot in to even the score once again.

Minutes after the equalizer Okposo would get called for roughing against Caral Hagelin (whom would also have a coincidental roughing minor).

It would be Benoit Pouliot with the game winning goal (and Hagelin with his first point of the season with an assist) for the Rangers.

The end of the game would see Rangers Brand Richards called for roughing against Cal Clutterbuck, and Derek Dorsett assessed a 10-minute misconduct; while Islanders Cal Clutterbuck received a roughing and John Tavares ended the night with a roughing and a 10-minute misconduct.

Anaheim Ducks at Philadelphia Flyers

After not playing one another last season due to a shortened schedule due to the lockout the Flyers wasted no time to try and establish themselves over their western conference counterpart.

Matt Read would put a wrist shot past Jonas Hiller less than four-minutes into the game to give the Flyers the early lead. It would be a penalty to Anaheim’s captain Ryan Getzlaf for slashing that would lead to a powerplay goal from new Flyer Vincent Lecavalier to give Philadelphia a two goal lead to end the first.

The Ducks would come back in the second and have Andrew Cogliano bring them within one of the Flyers.

It would be Kyle Palmieri in the third with a backhanded goal to even the game and a tip-in off of a shot by Nick Bonino to give the Ducks the win in Philadelphia.

Anaheim got the two points; however, they may have lost Teemu Selanne as he took a stick to the face and according to the team lost a tooth and needed stitches.

Dallas Stars at Montreal Canadians

Teams that had not played one another in over a year due to the lockout shorted schedule last year having a fight before a goal was probably not what those watching had in mind; but it’s what they got.

Just over ten minutes into the game Montreal’s Francis Bouillon and Dallas’ Antoine Roussel dropped the gloves.

Possibly spurred with a momentum swing from the fight it would be Michael Bournival with a slapshot past Kari Lehtonen to give the Canadiens the lead.

The second period would see Rene Bourque increase Monteal’s lead over the Stars to 2-0 before a late period goal from Cody Eakin would bring Dallas within one.

It would be a scoreless third that would give the Canadianes the victory over Dallas; however, there would be a late period incident where Stars’ netminder Lehtonen would get called for roughing against Brendan Gallagher (Gallagher would receive a goaltender interference call of his own).

Tampa Bay Lightning at New Jersey Devils

After a scoreless and penaltyless first period it would be a penalty call to Devils Anton Volchenkov that would shake things up. With New Jersey down a man while Volchenkov sat for interference it would be Adam Henirique with a short-handed goal to give the Devils the lead.

Midway through the second it would be Jaromir Jagr with his third of the season as he put an unassisted snap snot past Ben Bishop to give the Devils the 2-0 lead.

With a penalty to Devils Henrique for hooking it would be a power play goal for Steven Stamkos to get the Lightning on the scoreboard.

A rough third period would see coincidental hi-sticking penalties to Tampa’s Andrej Sustr and New Jersey’s Ryan Carter.

Both teams would see time on the power play yet fail to campitalize on it giving Jagr his 119th game winning goal making him second all time for game winning goals to Gordie Howe (121).

Ottawa Senators at Chicago Blackhawks

When playing the defending Stanley Cup Champions it is probably smart to stay out of the penalty box; the Senators thought they would try their luck though as Chris Neil would get called for hi=sticking Brandon Pirri. Chicago took advantage of the early powerplay and Andrew Shaw tipped-in a shot from Patrick Sharp for the lead.

Not wanting to head to intermission losing to Chicago it would be Milan Michalek with a goal to even things up with a minute left in the period.

Second period would see Ottawa with a power play as Brent Seabrook was called for tripping Clakre MacArthur. Kyle Turris would give the Senators a lead with a powerplay goal with MacArther getting the assist.

In a game of tick-tack goals Marian Hossa would give the Blackhawks the equalizer only to have Joe Corvo net his first of the season with a slapshot to give Ottawa the 3-2 lead.

Just over a minute after Corvo’s go-ahead-goal it would be Mika Zibanejad with a goal of his own to give the Senators a 4-2 lead over the Blackhawks.

Jonathan Toews would net a wraparound goal to bring his team within one before the end of the second period.

Down by one to start the third Toews would score his second of the game to make it a 4-4 tie in Chciago. With no penalties called in the third it would be Toews again as a backhanded shot past Craig Anderson would give the Blackhawks captain a hat trick on home ice.

With Chicago now up 5-4 if would be Andrew Shaw looking to increase their lead over Ottawa as he made it 6-4. Seconds later Zack Smith would get Ottawa within one of Chicago only to see the Blackhawks take the win at home.

Winnipeg Jets at St. Louis Blues

Brenden Morrow would open the scoring and give the ST. Louis Blues the early lead on home ice; however, Morrow would take a roughing penalty as teammate Derek Roy was called for interference and the Jets would take advantage of the advantage and see Blake Wheeler score on a slapshot to tie the game.

Period two would go scoreless as both teams were awarded powerplay opportunities that neither would score on.

With the game tied at one in the third it would be an early goal from Alex Pietrangelo to give the Blues the lead. An elbowing penalty to Jets Devin Setoguchi would see Bryan Little score a short-handed goal to tie the game.

With a minute left in the game it would be a powerplay goal from Alexander Steen to give the Blues the win over the Jets.

Toronto Maple Leafs at Edmonton Oilers

Less than two minutes into the game it would be Phil Kessel with his eighth goal of the season to give the Maple Leafs the early lead.

It wouldn’t be until the second period before another goal would be scored as James van Riemsdyk would double Toronto’s lead over Edmonton. Kessel would get his third point of the night as he netted a wrist shot nearing the midway point in the game to give the Maples Leafs a 3-0 lead.

The third period would see Cody Franson called for kneeing Oilers Ryan Nugent-Hopkins while Toronto’s Colton Orr and Edmonton’s Luke Gazdic would recive coincidental 10-minute minors. Nazem Kadri would score on a deflected shot from Morgan Rielly to give Toronto the 4-0 win in Edmonton.

Los Angeles Kings at Phoenix Coyotes

If it was not for penalties the first period box score would be empty for this game.

The second period would start with a fight between Kings’ Daniel Carcillo and Coyotes’ Kyle Chipchurra. It would take until nearly the end of the period before Derek Morris would score for the Coyotes to get a mark in the scoring area of the box score. A late period penalty to Justin Williams would give the Coyotes a powerplay in which Shane Doan would double their lead over the Kings.

Third period would see Chipchura tip-in a goal to give Phoenix a 3-0 lead over Los Angeles while a late period penalty to Coyotes Zbnek Michalek would give Jarret Stoll his first goal of the season as the Kings broke Mike Smith’s bid for a shutout.
