Teemu Forever: Will the Finnish Flash Play in 2013-14

08/01/2013 at 1:31pm EDT

Known as the Finnish Flash Teemu Selanne has been winning fans over from most fan bases since his record shattering rookie season with the Original Winnipeg Jets; now at 43 years of age, and a current Unrestricted Free Agent have we seen the last of Selanne’s playing career?

Janne Virtanen ask the question this morning on Twitter:

After playing with the Jets, Selanne’s career has taken stops with the Colorado Avalanche, the San Jose Sharks, most recently his stint with the Anaheim Ducks has seen him playing along side good friend and countryman Saku Koivu as both have been Alternate Captains.

Playing in yet another lockout shortened season Selanne is weighing the questions all UFA’s ask:

Am I content with where I am? Is content the way you should feel about where you are? Does the family want to re locate again? Is my body done? If not my current team than which team would be a good fit for me?

So there are many more questions that players probably ask themselves and their family, agent, etc. before they make a decision. It is a huge decision to make for a player and their family.

Where would the Finnish Flash go to play (let’s just say one) more NHL Season?

First choice is always the easiest: Anaheim Ducks. The front office has provided some changes to the team this summer as they sent Bobby Ryan to the Ottawa Senators after Daniel Alfredsson scooted off to Detroit for a “final” NHL season.

Speaking of Alfredsson’s deflection from Ottawa to Detroit – could Selanne be thinking along the same lines? That time may be ticking on a chance to win another Cup so it’s time to make a move?

How much is he willing to move? His entire family?

If not then maybe the LA Kings is a good stop for Selanne.

Across town rivals may be a heartbreaker for Ducks’ fans; however, it may be the best for Selanne and his family if he feels he needs a team change, just not a lifestyle change.

Could Selanne return to Winnipeg?

When the Atlanta Thrashers moved to Winnipeg and then became the Jets they had put an offer out to Selanne to return to the city where his career began. Would they over him a chance to once again play out the rest of his career in a Jets (be it a different Jets) uniform? It would be a heartwarming move that most fans would understand; but goes back to – is it what Selanne wants?

Does Selanne want to retire?

Doubtful. We are into August now and he has not announced retirement. Not many players want to retire, it’s not in their blood to want to retire, the time just eventually comes where they must.

The Era of The Finnish Flash will eventually come to an end no matter which option it is that comes to pass here soon; hopefully we all get the chance to sit back and watch a legend at least one more year. #TeemuForever
