from Stu Cowan of the Montreal Gazette,

Former Canadiens defenceman Sheldon Souray has high praise for the doctors involved with the NHL and NHL Players’ Association’s substance-abuse program who helped him get his life back on track after an addiction to painkillers.

Souray said during an interview on Sunday that he has been sober for nine months now.

“Last year at this time I was so sad,” Souray said over the phone from his summer home in Idaho. “I don’t know if depressed is the right word, but I was just spinning my wheels. I just wasn’t happy … I was just not happy.”

After his oldest daughter Valentina’s 14th birthday last September, Souray decided he had to change the way he was living and get sober. He said alcohol wasn’t his problem, it was an addiction to painkillers. His career came to an end after the 2012-13 NHL season because of a wrist surgery.
