This is not meant to be an overreaction to the Vegas Golden Knights losing back-to-back shootouts with their season on the line this week, although it’s a convenient entry point.
No, in fact, I’ve been ruminating on this for a few years now. And I’m hardly alone on that.
Is it time the NHL looks at eliminating the shootout and extending three-on-three overtime in the regular season instead?
There’s just something that feels “off” about an individual skills event like the shootout having such an impact at such a critical time in a team’s season.
Not that three-on-three overtime is normal hockey either, but it’s a closer semblance to the real thing at least.
I canvassed NHL GMs on the matter Wednesday, asking them specifically if they would be in favour of scrapping the shootout in return for extending three-on-three overtime. Of the 31 GMs who responded to me, 19 were in favour, nine were against, and three abstained...
