Tough format. Both teams which went undefeated through the preliminaries (USA and Switzerland ) eliminated from gold after one loss. Both medalless at end.
1-0 Germany
Seider with assist.
The USA wasn't as good as thought.
1-1
DeSmet was a poor choice for a goalie by the US. He has never won a critical series or game. Reminds me of the Jimmah.
Big hit on German player at centre ice A few seconds later Moe steps into Canadian player with solid hit. Got to love the guy. He comes to play. 1-1 after 1 period.
Mo in full Beast Mode. This is the first game of the tournament I've seen, and no team seems terribly stacked, but I don't recognize more than one or two names on GER (is Drei playing?), and here they are playing for gold.
Ausgezeichnet.
No Drei
2-1 germany
Mo has a pair of apples, now.
2-2
Niederberger doesn't have a North American contract... Just throwing that out there.
He's looked good in the games I have seen.
I wonder how Joe Veleno is feeling. I really like him, but he made a Big mistake/ major brain malfunction and he can only watch. He was getting good ice time and playing well This would have been good experience fo him. Hopefully, lesson learned.
3-2 Canada
4-2
Empty net
5-2
Gold for Canada. Germany silver, first medal in 70 years!
Dominik Kubalik and Mo Seider named to first all star team.
I'm off to a neighborhood barbecue. The significant other is giving me the stink eye.
This is a far bigger tournament for the European teams/fans than those from North America, but to see the players singing along with the National Anthem while the flag is being raised is still a very special moment.
To the point they announced a national holiday in Latvia tomorrow.
For me as a European living in USA, it's always sad that world championships do not really attract interest in North American market and lately even teams like Sweden, Finland and Czechia do not send their best teams, Maybe they should make it once in 4 years like soccer and really play the best teams. I understand NHL owners will not be in favor and it's always an issue even for Olympic games but I still think at least at some point there should be an international tournament so the players represent their countries in the tournament that matters.
I was hoping Germany would win. Oh well.
