October Numbers

via the NHL PR department,

The first calendar month of the 2022-23 regular-season began with a back-to-back set in Prague and ended with a three-game Halloween that produced the first six-point performance by a player this season. With the calendar turned and Hockey Fights Cancer month underway, a look back at an October that yielded goals at a rate of 6.3 per game and saw 48% of contests finish as comeback wins:

* The 6.3 scoring rate is tied with 2005-06 for the highest goals-per-game figure at this stage of a season (146 GP) over the past 26 campaigns.

* Seven non-playoff teams from 2021-22 currently hold a playoff spot, including the Western Conference-leading Golden Knights. The other teams in the West are Winnipeg, Chicago and Seattle, while Buffalo, Philadelphia and New Jersey have moved up in the Eastern Conference. Four of the clubs were among the bottom six in the 2021-22 NHL standings (CHI: 27th, NJD: 28th, PHI: 29th & SEA: 30th).

* 48% of games were comeback wins (70 of 146 GP), the highest percentage at this stage of a season in NHL history (tied with 1986-87: 70 of 146 GP).

* 17% of games were won by a team that trailed by multiple goals (25 of 146 GP), the second-highest percentage at this stage of a season in NHL history behind 1986-87 (18%; 26 of 146 GP).

* In October, nearly one of every three games in which a team took a multi-goal lead ended up tied. Teams led by multiple goals in 122 contests, with a team rallying to at least tie the score in 39 of those (32%). In 11 games, a team turned a multi-goal deficit into a multi-goal lead.

* There have been 70 games with at least one lead change, the most in 35 years and a top-five figure at this stage of any season (146 GP), behind four campaigns from the highest-scoring decade in League history (81 in 1986-87, 75 in 1982-83, 74 in 1984-85 and 72 in 1985-86).

The two-time reigning Art Ross Trophy winner is off to yet another high-scoring start, with ConnorMcDavid leading the League in goals (9) and points (18) – highlighted by two hat tricks and four games with at least three points (both tops in the NHL).

* The Oilers will play their 10th game of the season tonight, with both McDavid (2 points) and LeonDraisaitl (3 points) within reach of a rare back-to-back “hot starts” feat. After notching 22 and 23 points, respectively, though 10 contests in 2021-22, they can join Wayne Gretzky (7 from 1982-83–1988-89), Mario Lemieux (3 from 1986-87–1988-89), Newsy Lalonde (3 from 1917-18–1919-20), MarcelDionne (2 from 1979-80–1980-81) and CharlieSimmer (2 from 1979-80–1980-81) as the only players in League history to have 20+ points within their first 10 games in consecutive seasons.

* Pursuing McDavid on the goals list are six others with at least seven goals, including three players age 23 or younger: Cole Caufield, 21; Andrei Svechnikov, 22; and Gabriel Vilardi, 23. The others in that group are 2022 Stanley Cup champion Valeri Nichushkin and Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy winners Steven Stamkos and David Pastrnak.

* Svechnikov and Vilardi each scored their eighth goal of the season Oct. 31, while Buffalo’s Tage Thompson had 3-3—6 to match Wayne Gretzky (1989) and Bobby Clarke (1976) for the highest point total ever in a game on Halloween. Thompson, the first Sabres player in nearly 30 years with a six-point showing, enters November with 5-4—9 in his past two contests and is one of 21 players with at least six goals this season.

* The only player with an official active season-opening point streak is Devils forward Jesper Bratt (4-11—15 in 9 GP), who can equal a franchise record when New Jersey plays its 10th contest tonight in Vancouver (the start of a three-game road trip through Western Canada). Bratt needs two points Tuesday to match the highest total through 10 games in a season by a Devils player – three New Jersey players have recorded 17 points through 10 contests, with Aaron Broten, Kirk Muller and Pat Verbeek all achieving the feat in 1986-87 (the franchise record of 19 was set before relocation).

The Stars sit atop the Central Division standings thanks to the shining play of 23-year-old JakeOettinger, the youngest of the four goaltenders with at least five wins this season. Oettinger accounts for each Dallas victory in 2022-23 and paces the NHL in goals-against average (1.40) and save percentage (.952) among netminders with at least five appearances. His 1.40 goals-against average is the lowest by a Stars goaltender through seven appearances in a season and second lowest at that stage in franchise history (Gump Worsley: 1.00 GAA in 1971-72 w/ Minnesota North Stars).

* Seven goaltenders remain without a regulation loss (min. 3 GP), including Linus Ullmark (6-0-0) of the League-leading Bruins, Metropolitan Division rivals Igor Shesterkin (5-0-2 w/ NYR) and Carter Hart (5-0-1 w/ PHI) and Sabres netminder Craig Anderson (3-0-0), the oldest player in the NHL this season. Ullmark is closing in on becoming the 29th goaltender in NHL history to win each of his first seven decisions of a season – a feat that has been achieved in each of the past two campaigns (Frederik Andersen: 8-0-0 in 2021-22 w/ CAR; Jack Campbell: 11-0-0 in 2020-21 w/ TOR).

* Logan Thompson also has made a name for himself in the first month of the season, compiling a 4-2-0 record while starting six of 10 games for the Western Conference-leading Golden Knights. Maintaining his rookie status after posting a 10-5-3 record in 19 appearances last season, Thompson is the only goaltender with multiple shutouts in 2022-23. The 25-year-old has allowed one goal or fewer in three starts this season, trailing only Oettinger (4) for the most such starts in the NHL.

The top two teams in the NHL have a new head coach at the helm, the first time that has been the case at this stage of a season (146 GP) since 1939-40 when Cooney Weiland and Frank Boucher had the Bruins and Rangers as the No. 1 and No. 2-ranked clubs, respectively, after 146 contests in a 168-game NHL season.

* Jim Montgomery has led the No. 1-ranked Bruins to their best nine-game start in franchise history in terms of both wins (8) and points (16). Boston, which opens November with a matchup against Pittsburgh tonight on ESPN, ESPN+ and TVAS, has never won nine of its first 10 games of a season.

* After serving 399 games behind the Bruins’ bench from 2016-17 to 2021-22, Bruce Cassidy has led the Golden Knights to an 8-2-0 start as he looks to help his new club return to the postseason after their first miss in 2021-22. Cassidy is the first head coach in NHL history to win at least eight of his first 10 games with multiple franchises – he also began 8-2-0 with Boston in 2016-17.

* 79% of games that have extended beyond 60 minutes have been decided during the five-minute 3-on-3 period (19 of 24 GP), including dazzling finishes by Jack Eichel and Trevor Zegrason the two most recent OT tallies. The highest end-of-season percentage of extra-time games decided in the overtime period since the shootout was introduced in 2005-06 is 68% in 2018-19 (184 of 271 GP); that rate was 44% in 2014-15 (136 of 306 GP), the last season before 3-on-3 overtime was implemented.

* There have been 4.6 even-strength goals-per-game, the highest rate at this stage of a season in 30 years (4.8 EVG/GP in 1992-93).

* Hits-per-game are among the highest on record at 47.8 – only 1999-00 (50.1), 2000-01 (47.9) and 2014-15 (47.1) have been north of 47.0 at this stage (146 GP).

* Milestone moments included Connor McDavid’s 700th point, Phil Kessel becoming the new NHL “Ironman,”Rasmus Dahlin setting an NHL record for defensemen with a five-game season-opening goal streak, and Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin climbing all-time lists.

* In addition to setting a franchise record for longest goal streak by a rookie, Shane Pinto’s strong start to the 2022-23 campaign was marked by the second-highest goals-per-game rate by a rookie in October over the past 32 years – behind only Teemu Selanne in 1992 and Elias Pettersson in 2018 (both 0.9 G/GP).

* Notable active streaks entering November include: Jesper Bratt’s nine-game point streak for New Jersey, Boston’s five-game winning streak and four-game goal streaks by Zach Hyman (EDM), David Pastrnak (BOS) and Gabriel Vilardi (LAK).
