FLYERS ERUPT FOR EIGHT GOALS IN HOME OPENER
Claude Giroux
(2-2—4), Sean Couturier (2-1—3) and Scott Laughton (2-0—2) each scored twice and Jakub Voracek and Shane Gostisbehere collected three assists apiece to power the Flyers past the Capitals in their home opener. Philadelphia scored at least eight goals in its home opener for just the second time in franchise history (also Oct. 7, 1982: 9-5 W vs. QUE). It also marked the team’s highest goal output in any regular-season game since Nov. 5, 2011 vs. CBJ (9-2 W).

HITCHCOCK PASSES ARBOUR INTO THIRD ON ALL-TIME WINS LIST
Stars head coach Ken Hitchcock registered the 783rd victory of his regular-season career to surpass Al Arbour(782) for sole possession of third place on the NHL’s all-time list among head coaches. Hitchcock, who also served behind the Dallas bench from 1996-2002 and led the team to its first Stanley Cup in 1999, is the franchise’s all-time leader in wins (279).

LIGHTNING CELEBRATE HISTORY AS KUCHEROV REWRITES IT

On a night when the Lightning celebrated the original 1992-93 team as part of its 25th anniversary season, Nikita Kucherov scored the winning goal to establish a franchise record and help Tampa Bay improve to 4-0-0 on home ice this season.

* Elias notes that Kucherov – who tied for second in the NHL with a career-high 40 goals in 2016-17 – became the first player in franchise history to score at least one goal in each of Tampa Bay’s first five games to begin a season. Only six players from any team have achieved the feat in the last 17 seasons.

MATTHEWS, BUTCHER PLAY HELP LEAD CLUBS TO VICTORIES
Maple Leafs forward Auston Matthews, last year’s Calder Trophy winner, and Devils defenseman Will Butcher, recipient of the 2017 Hobey Baker Award, each registered two points to continue their hot starts to the season and help their respective teams improve to 4-1-0:

* Matthews (2-0—2) scored his third career overtime goal – and second this week (also Monday vs. CHI) – to help the Maple Leafs defeat the Canadiens for the first time since Jan. 18, 2014. Matthews has registered at least one point in every game this season (5-3—8). With the victory, Mike Babcock became the 16th head coach in NHL history to record 600 career wins.

* Butcher (0-2—2) collected multiple assists for the third time in five career NHL games to help the Devils defeat the Rangers. According to Elias, Butcher (0-8—8) became the first rookie defenseman in NHL history to record at least eightassists in his first five career games. He also became the fourth rookie defenseman in the 100-year history of the NHL – and second in the modern era (since 1943-44) – to collect at least eight points in his first five career games.

SENATORS, KINGS STILL UNDEFEATED IN REGULATION
The Senators and Kings both earned victories to remain the only two teams without a regulation loss this season:

* Mike Hoffman and Kyle Turris each posted 2-1—3 as the Senators scored six goals for the second time in as many nights to extend their season-opening point streak to five games (3-0-2). Elias notes that this marks the fifth time in franchise history that Ottawa has opened a season with a point streak of at least five games (last: 5-0-0 in 2007-08); their only longer such streaks came in 2005-06 (6-0-0) and 2000-01 (6-0-3).

* Drew Doughty (1-1—2) scored the tiebreaking goal with two minutes remaining in the third period to lift the Kings to a 3-0-1 record in 2017-18, marking the first time the club has earned at least one point in each of its first four games to begin a season since 1995-96 when they started 4-0-3.
