NHL RETURNS FROM HOLIDAY BREAK WITH NINE GAMES
The NHL returns from its holiday break with a slate of nine games: Hockey Night in Canada hosts a pair of contests – the two division leaders in the Eastern Conference, the Capitals (25-6-2, 52 points) and Canadiens (20-13-3, 43 points), face off at Verizon Center, while the Oilers (15-18-2, 32 points) look to climb the ladder in the Pacific Division when they visit the Canucks (13-14-9, 35 points) at Rogers Arena; forward Jack Eichel, a native of North Chelmsford, Mass., who won the Hobey Baker Award last season at Boston University, makes his first professional appearance in Boston when the Sabres (14-16-4, 32 points) take on the Bruins (19-10-4, 42 points) at TD Garden; and the League-leading Stars (26-7-2, 54 points) open a back-to-back, home-and-home series with the division rival Blues (21-11-4, 46 points) at Scottrade Center.
PREPARATIONS CONTINUE FOR WINTER CLASSIC
Preparations continue for the 2016 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic between the Bruins and Canadiens at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass., on New Year’s Day (1:00 p.m. ET, NBC, SN, TVAS).

40TH IIHF WORLD JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP
The 40th IIHF World Junior Championship begins today in Helsinki, Finland, and runs through Tuesday, Jan. 5. Today’s schedule features Team Canada vs. Team USA at 1:00 p.m. ET (NHLN-US, TSN).

Five clubs that did not qualify for the Stanley Cup Playoffs in 2014-15 currently hold postseason spots (BOS, DAL, FLA, LAK and SJS).
