* Ovechkin scored his League-leading 27th goal of the season. In doing so, he passed Mike Gartner (397) for sole possession of second place on Washington’s all-time goals list. Ovechkin has 398-374—772 in 632 career games, all with the Capitals.

* Elias says that Ovechkin has scored seven career game-tying goals in the final minute of regulation (he also posted the tying marker with 32.4 seconds remaining in Tuesday’s victory over the Lightning). No other player has recorded more than four such goals since Ovechkin entered the League in October 2005.

* Ovechkin has 5-1—6 over his past three games. He is tied for fifth in the NHL with 27-10—37 in 31 contests this season.

* Backstrom added two assists, giving him 28 on the season (33 GP), tied for third in the League. He has 2-7—9 in his last three games, all of which have been multi-point efforts.

* Philipp Grubauer made 24 saves, plus another two in the shootout, to improve to 3-0-1 with a 2.06 goals-against average and .937 save percentage in five appearances this season.

* The Capitals improved to 6-1-1 in their last eight games, including points in five straight (4-0-1). They are 8-3 in shootouts this season and 11-3 in the tiebreaker under head coach Adam Oates.

* Scoring change: The Capitals’ goal at 11:17 of the first period now reads: Marcus Johansson from Ovechkin and Backstrom.

DUCKS CONTINUE HOME SUCCESS
Dustin Penner scored the decisive goal with 3:17 remaining in regulation to help the Ducks improve to 13-0-2 this season at Honda Center, their best home start in franchise history. Since 2005-06, only one other team has played its first 15 home games of a season without suffering a regulation defeat (2008-09 Sharks: 20-0-2).

* The Ducks have won five consecutive games overall, their third such streak this season (Oct. 5-20: 7-0-0, Nov. 2-10: 5-0-0). The team also has points in 10 of its past 11 contests (8-1-2), including eight straight (6-0-2).

* Penner has 10 goals in 28 games this season, matching his total from his prior 115 regular-season contests dating to 2010-11. He also has two game-winning goals; his most recent winner prior to 2013-14 was scored Jan. 25, 2011 (for the Oilers).

* Ryan Getzlaf earned the primary assist on Penner’s goal to extend his point streak to 14 games (6-11—17), the longest such streak in the NHL this season and longest by any player since Penguins forward Pascal Dupuis had an equal run March 7-April 7, 2012 (10-12—22).

* Including the two games he played prior to a three-game absence Nov. 10-14, Getzlaf has points in each of his last 16 individual appearances (10-13—23). While that is not an official streak, it does mark the longest point streak of Getzlaf’s career.

* Teemu Selanne potted the 679th goal of his NHL career to snap a 19-game scoring drought and 16-game point drought. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Selanne’s 19 consecutive games without a goal matched the longest streak of his 21-year career (set while playing with the Avalanche in February-March 2004). His 16-game point drought marked the second-longest such famine of his NHL tenure (behind one covering the same 19 games as his 2004 goalless streak).

* Jonas Hiller made 23 saves to improve to 8-0-2 with a 1.79 goals-against average, .942 save percentage and two shutouts in 11 home appearances this season (5-4-2, 3.11 GAA, .885 SV% in 11 road GP).

BLACKHAWKS USE STRONG FIRST PERIOD TO DEFEAT KINGS
The Blackhawks scored three first-period goals to defeat the Kings in the teams’ first meeting since the 2013 Western Conference Final, which Chicago won in five games. The Blackhawks improved to 17-0-3 when scoring first this season and 7-0-2 in the second half of back-to-back games.

* Patrick Kane collected an assist to extend his point streak to nine games (4-13—17). He has at least one point in 21 of his last 22 outings (12-22—34) and ranks second in the NHL with 19-26—45 in 36 games this season, one behind League leader Sidney Crosby (18-28—46 in 34 GP).

* Jonathan Toews posted two helpers for his eighth multi-point game of the season. He has 1-6—7 during a five-game point streak.

* Duncan Keith recorded his 28th assist of the season. He leads all defensemen and is tied for third in the League in that category.

* Marian Hossa scored the 27th shorthanded goal of his NHL career, which ranks third among active skaters and tied for 33rd all-time.

* Antti Raanta made 21 saves to improve to 6-1-1 with a 2.41 goals-against average and .915 save percentage in his first nine NHL appearances.

* The Blackhawks scored a power-play goal for the ninth consecutive game; they are 12-for-36 (33.3%) with the man advantage in that span and rank fifth overall in League efficiency this season (29-for-121, 24.0%).

BISHOP, LIGHTNING PICK UP RARE WIN IN DETROIT
Ben Bishop made 28 saves to post his third shutout of the season and the sixth of his NHL career. With the victory, Bishop improved to 17-5-2 with a 1.97 goals-against average and .933 save percentage in 25 appearances this season. He ranks in the top five in the NHL in wins (t-2nd), goals-against average (4th), save percentage (5th) and shutouts (t-1st).

* The Lightning won for the second time in as many visits to Joe Louis Arena this season. Prior to 2013-14, the team was 1-13-1 in its first 15 games in Detroit since entering the NHL for the 1992-93 season. Their only prior victory came on Jan. 12, 1994, when Daren Puppa made 15 saves in a 4-2 win.

* Tyler Johnson recorded his second game-winning goal of the season. He is tied for second in rookie scoring with 8-10—18 in 33 games this season.
