Thirty teams will be in action on Saturday in the first 15-game day of the 2022-23 season and 20th in NHL history. In the NHL’s most recent 15-game day on April 29, teams combined for 104 goals (6.9 G/GP), marking the most total goals in a single day in League history.

In anticipation of a Saturday filled with hockey, the NHL Stats & Information team compiled 15 #NHLStats ahead of a 15-game slate (one per game):

1. The streaking Devils carry multiple winning streaks into Saturday’s matinee in Ottawa. New Jersey will look to extend its overall win streak to 12 games, a stretch that has only occurred 17 times in NHL history, and their road winning streak to eight games, which would be the third longest in franchise history.

2. The Flames will visit the Panthers in the first meeting between the two teams since a blockbuster off-season trade on July 22 that saw Calgary send Matthew Tkachuk to Florida for a return that included Jonathan Huberdeau and MacKenzie Weegar – just the second time in NHL history that players coming off 100+ point seasons were dealt for one another during the offseason (also Wayne Gretzky and Jimmy Carson after the 1987-88 season).

3. The Jets will look to extend their home winning streak to six games when they welcome Sidney Crosby and the Penguins to Winnipeg. The Jets, 6-1-0 on home ice in 2022-23, will aim to win seven of their first eight home games of a season for the first time in franchise history.

4. Mitchell Marner aims to extend the League’s longest active point streak to 12 games (3-12—15 in 11 GP) when the Maple Leafs host the Sabres on Hockey Night in Canada. After posting a career-high 13-game stretch in 2021-22, Marner can become the second player in franchise history to post multiple 12-game point streaks – only Lorne Carr has done so to date (14 GP in 1942-43 and 13 GP in 1943-44).

5. The Bruins can match an NHL record by extending their season-opening home win streak to 11 games when they host the Blackhawks – one of two franchises already tied for the NHL mark (11-0-0 in 1963-64). The other team to do so was the Panthers last season (11-0-0 at home to start 2021-22). The Bruins have outscored opponents 39-17 at TD Garden – their +22-goal differential on home ice is six higher than the next closest team in 2022-23 (WPG: +14).

6. Avalanche defenseman Cale Makar (51-147—198 in 193 GP), who has six multi-point games so far in 2022-23, sits two points shy of 200 for his career. He can become the first blueliner in NHL history to reach the 200-point milestone before skating in his 200th career game. Hall of Famer Sergei Zubov (207 GP) currently holds the mark for fastest defenseman to 200 points.

7. Red Wings defenseman Moritz Seider (8-48—56 in 99 GP) and forward Lucas Raymond (29-38—67 in 99 GP) are both expected to skate in their 100th career game Saturday. Among defensemen to start their career with the Red Wings, only three have had more points through 100 games than Seider: Nicklas Lidstrom (12-58—70), Reed Larson (21-47—68) and Yves Racine (12-52—64).

8. Canadiens captain Nick Suzuki has multiple points in three of his last four contests and has recorded eight such instances this season. The only players with more multi-point games during the 2022-23 campaign are Sharks defenseman Erik Karlsson (9), Oilers forward Connor McDavid (9) and Stars forward Jason Robertson (9).

9. Ducks goaltender John Gibsonleads the NHL in 2022-23 with 416 saves in 13 appearances while facing an average of 38.5 shots against per 60 minutes (38.5 SA/60) – the only netminder so far this season to make at least 400 saves. Among goaltenders who have appeared in 10-plus games in 2022-23, Gibson ranks 10th in even-strength save percentage (.922).

10. Hurricanes netminder Pyotr Kochetkov can stretch his career-opening win streak to six games, which would trail only Martin Jones (8 GP in 2013-14), Bob Froese (8 GP in 1982-83) and Wayne Thomas (7 GP in 1972-73) for the longest such run in League history. On the other side of the ice, Minnesota’s Kirill Kaprizov has 10-9—19 in 17 games this season and owns a career points-per-game rate of 1.16 – only two active players born outside North America posted a higher points-per-game mark through their first three NHL seasons: Alex Ovechkin (1.27) and Evgeni Malkin (1.26).

11. Stars forwards Roope Hintz (6-9—15 in 10 GP) and Jason Robertson (9-10—19 in 10 GP) each enter Saturday with 10-game point streaks. Should they both extend, it would mark just the second time in Stars/North Stars history that multiple different players had point streaks longer than 10 games in the same season. Brian Bellows (20 GP) and Neal Broten (15 GP) both did so in 1985-86, when the club was based in Minnesota.

12. Predators defenseman Ryan McDonagh is set to face his former team for the first time when Nashville hosts Tampa Bay. McDonagh helped the Lightning earn consecutive Stanley Cup championships in 2020 and 2021 – only Victor Hedman (25:37) averaged more time on ice per game for Tampa Bay during the two championship runs than McDonagh (23:32).

13. The Kraken (9-5-3 in 17 GP) look to earn their 10th win of the season when they host the Kings. Last season, it took Seattle 28 games to hit the 10-win benchmark. The Kraken are 7-2-1 over their last 10 contests, matching a franchise-best 10-game stretch set earlier this season (7-2-1 from Oct. 19 – Nov. 8).

14. After being selected with the first two picks of the 2015 NHL Draft, Connor McDavid and Jack Eichel will face each other in the NHL for the 10th time. Eichel (5-5—10 in 9 GP) has a slight lead in production in head-to-head games against McDavid (3-5—8 in 9 GP). In terms of standings points, both have seen their teams earn an equal 11 points in head-to-head meetings: Eichel (5-3-1, 11 points); McDavid (4-2-3, 11 points).

15. Since Nov. 1, Erik Karlsson has recorded 5-12—17 in eight games which leads all players over that span. Karlsson can join Roman Josi (4-24—28 in March 2022) as only the second defenseman in the last ten years to lead all players in points in a calendar month.

TRIO OF CANUCKS PLAYERS POST MULTI-POINT GAMES IN WIN
Quinn Hughes collected two assists while Brock Boeser (2-0—2) and Elias Pettersson (2-0—2) each posted a multi-goal game to help the Canucks extend their point streak against the Kings to 11 contests (9-0-2 dating to Nov. 24, 2018) – their longest active run versus one franchise.

* Hughes reached and eclipsed the 15-assist mark in 2022-23 (0-16—16 in 14 GP). Only three players in Canucks history have required fewer games in a season to hit the mark: Anatoli Semenov (11 GP in 1992-93), Jiri Bubla (13 GP in 1983-84) and Thomas Gradin (13 GP in 1983-84).

* Hughes posted his 32nd career multi-assist game – only four defensemen in Canucks history have more: Dennis Kearns (53), Alexander Edler (42), Jyrki Lumme (38) and Doug Lidster (34). Hughes, a native of Orlando, Fla., also tied Gary Suter for the most multi-assist games by a U.S.-born defenseman prior to age 24, trailing only Phil Housley (52) and Brian Leetch (50).
