NHL Short Notes

10/25/2022 at 3:46am EDT

* Exactly half the games contested Monday featured a comeback win courtesy of the Oilers, Capitals and Senators – contests that included a three-point period for Leon Draisaitl, the 122nd career game-winning goal for Alex Ovechkin and a new franchise rookie record set by Ottawa’s Shane Pinto.

* It’s been nearly 13 years – 4,738 days to be exact – since Phil Kessel made his Maple Leafs debut. As fate would have it, the now Golden Knights forward tied Keith Yandle for longest “Ironman” streak in NHL history against the club where it all started.

* Rasmus Dahlin and the Sabres will look to keep streaks alive as Buffalo has the opportunity to sweep a road trip of at least four games for just the third time in franchise history on a 10-game Tuesday.

START THE WEEK WITH COMEBACK WINS IN THREE OF SIX GAMES
The Oilers, Capitals and Senators each completed comeback wins en route to victory Monday as half of the games featured a team overcoming a deficit. So far in 2022-23, 46 of the 97 games contested have featured a comeback win (47.4%), after the 2021-22 campaign which concluded with 42% of contests ending in come-from-behind fashion.

* Leon Draisaitl had 1-2—3 during a four-goal second-period rally as the Oilers (3-3-0, 6 points) battled back from a multi-goal deficit on home ice. Draisaitl’s three-point period was the 13th of his career, which trails only teammate Connor McDavid (16), Patrick Kane (15) and Artemi Panarin (14) for the most among all skaters since his NHL debut in 2014-15.

* Alex Ovechkin scored one of six Washington goals – his standing as the game winner – and surpassed Gordie Howe (121) for sole possession of second on the NHL’s all-time game-winning goals list in the process. The Capitals captain’s lone marker was the 397th he’s scored on the road, which trails only Wayne Gretzky (402) for the most in League history.

* Rookie Shane Pinto (1-0—1) found the back of the net for the fifth straight game to help the Senators (4-2-0, 6 points) earn their second comeback win of 2022-23 and extend their season-opening home win streak to four games – tied for the longest such run in franchise history (also 4 GP in 2005-06 & 1997-98). The last rookie on any team to post a longer goal streak than Pinto was Filip Forsberg in 2014-15 (6 GP w/ NSH).

DID YOU KNOW?
Senators goaltender Magnus Hellberg (29 saves) earned his third career NHL win more than 11 years after he was drafted by the Predators in 2011. Since then, Hellberg has tended the net in eight different leagues across Sweden, Russia and North America. After signing a one-year deal with Seattle this summer, the netminder was claimed off waivers by Ottawa in early October, eventually accomplishing a one-of-a-kind feat in his first appearance with the club.

#NHLStats Pack for “Ironman” Phil Kessel

Phil Kessel (0-1—1) collected an assist on the game-opening goal in his 989th consecutive game and tied Keith Yandle for the longest “Ironman” streak in League history, setting the stage for Tuesday when he’ll break the NHL record against the Sharks at 10:30 p.m. ET, 273 days after Yandle took over as the leader. Monday’s record-tying game came against the Maple Leafs, the team he started his run with.

* Read the #NHLStats Pack on Kessel’s unlikely streak that was preceded by a cancer diagnosis at age 19 and has included two championships, various viral moments, a plethora of pranks with teammates as well as multiple interactions with prominent members of society ranging from professional wrestlers to U.S. presidents.

TWENTY TEAMS IN ACTION TUESDAY... BUCKLE UP
A total of 20 teams will be in action on a 10-game Tuesday, including the Blackhawks who will have the opportunity to become the second team in NHL history to record four straight multi-goal comeback wins (also CAR: 4 GP from Oct. 24-29, 2005) when they welcome the Panthers. Meanwhile, Rasmus Dahlin and the Sabres will aim to conclude their four-game road trip with four straight wins when they visit the Kraken.

* Buffalo has the opportunity to sweep a road trip of at least four games for just the third time in franchise history (5-0-0 from Jan. 14-23, 1984 & 4-0-0 from March 21-26, 1979). In fact, the Sabres have won four straight road games only twice in the past 10 years (5 GP from Nov. 8-24, 2018 & 4 GP from Jan. 22 – Feb. 10, 2018).

* Dahlin, who was named the NHL’s First Star of the Week Monday, has 5-3—8 through the first five games of 2022-23 and can become the first defenseman to hit double digits should he post a multi-point outing Tuesday. Only three active blueliners have reached the 10-point mark in a season in six contests or fewer: Morgan Rielly (4 GP in 2018-19), John Carlson (6 GP in 2019-20) and Shayne Gostisbehere (6 GP in 2017-18).
