Via Chris Nichols, the Calgary Sun's Eric Francis reports that the Calgary Flames are going to trade Mike Cammalleri as the 31-year-old mini-mite is intent upon testing the unrestricted free agent marketplace:
Flames acting GM Brian Burke revealed last week the Flames offered Cammalleri a contract extension, one which is almost certainly several million dollars less a year than he will get on the open market.
So he will leave Calgary via trade. He has submitted a list of seven teams he would not go to — as per his contractual rights — and will now wait to hear his fate.
Only question now is how much he will go for. If Burke can wrangle up a first-round draft pick for a rental the exercise will have been considered an unmitigated success.
A second-rounder would also suffice, assuming it would come with a young prospect of some sort.
A third-rounder in return would be considered a fail unless the deal also includes a decent prospect.
That's the meat of the article, but Francis also ponders where Cammalleri might go and whether someone who last scored 30+ goals 5 years ago can still cash in.
