Garth Snow Could Be An Option For A GM Position

05/22/2023 at 5:34am EDT

from Arthur Staple of The Athletic,

What if I told you there was a potential front-office candidate who had built the nucleus of back-to-back conference finalists, engineered one of the most lopsided trades this century and assembled a winning team through the draft and shrewd waiver/free-agent pickups?

You might ask why that former GM hasn’t been at the top of the interview lists for the various openings this offseason. I’m asking it too: Why hasn’t Garth Snow gotten any interest around the league?

There are a few factors at play here, not all of them the fault of teams searching for new GMs or team presidents. Snow has been out of the league since Lou Lamoriello dismissed him five years ago and five years is a long time to be out of the game. It’s partly due to the golden parachute that firing triggered, a parting gift from Charles Wang, the mercurial Islanders owner who hired Snow straight out of being the team’s backup goalie. When Wang sold the Islanders to Scott Malkin in 2016, he added a clause to Snow’s contract that provided a five-year payout if he was let go.

Well, Shanny shot himself in the foot with the talk of needing an, "experienced NHL GM," and now, we're seeing recycled names being thrown around:  Treliving, Snow, Shero, Bergevin, Poile (highly unlikely), Chiarelli (hahahahahahahahaha!!!!), etc.  The old boy network.  Just the same ol' names over and over again.  If it were my choice, I'd go with Ryan Martin of NYR, Tick Tock's capologist before Yzerman let him go.

Then again, it's the Ample Laffs, so let that circus freakshow keep on keeping on.

Garth's problem was in selecting coaches who were better as assistant coaches than head coaches.   That' on him.   He had some serious swings and misses in the draft (Dal Colle at # 5 - the Joshua Ho-Sang experiment - Griffin Reinhart at # 4  Kieffer Bellows at 19) and some big wins (Tavares should'nt count as he was # 1 overall)  Barzal, and some later round gems ( Lee, Cizikas, Pelech, Devon Towes and Ilya Sorokin in round 3 or later)

The problem was also Charles Wang.   Charles was a guy who thought he knew better than the hockey literati / career hockey guys.   Would surround himself with execs from his old company where he was CEO (Computer Associates) and would rather lose with his friends than win with professionals running the show.  More like Charles O. Finley than Bill Torrey or Sam Pollock.

That said - would love to see Garth run the Ranger$ into the ground!   :)

But you DO have to give Garth some credit for some good things too.
