Duncan Keith Retires

07/12/2022 at 11:07am EDT

(Edmonton, AB) - Edmonton Oilers defenceman Duncan Keith has announced his retirement.

Keith, 38, appeared in 64 games during his only season as an Oiler after being acquired from the Chicago Blackhawks one year ago. A veteran presence in the dressing room and on the ice, Keith averaged 19:44 of ice time per game during the regular season, ranked second in takeaways and third in hits while mentoring the team’s younger defencemen.

He also appeared in all 16 playoff games for the Oilers, including the 150th postseason game of his career during the Western Conference Finals.

A three-time Stanley Cup champion, two-time Norris Trophy winner and 2015 Conn Smythe award recipient while with Chicago, Keith reached new milestones in his 17th NHL season. In addition to playing his 1,200th NHL game on Nov. 1 versus Seattle and tallying his only goal as an Oiler, the steady defender later became just the second player in NHL history with 2,000 blocked shots.

Originally selected by Chicago in the second round, 54th overall in the 2002 NHL Draft, Keith anchored the Hawks’ defensive corps for more than a decade and finishes his Hall of Fame career playing 1,256 games with 106 goals, 540 assists and 675 penalty minutes along a plus/minus rating of +159.

A two-time Olympian who enjoyed gold medal wins in 2010 and 2014, Keith had departed Chicago for Edmonton second to only Stan Makita in career games-played for the franchise (1,192), 10th in career points (625), 6th in career assists (520), 5th in playoff games played (135) and 7th in playoff points (86).
