With Mother’s Day weekend many were out with family. I, myself, spent yesterday at my mom’s house getting asked by my family for hockey updates and being asked to recap the playoffs thus far. Here are some hockey highlights (or low lights depending on what way you look at it).
Friday
In case you missed it Friday kicked off the start of the preliminary round for the IIHF World Championship taking place in Minsk, Belarus.
Russia beat Switzerland 5-0
France upset Canada 3-2
USA beat hosting Belarus 6-1
Czech Republic edged out neighbor Slovakia 3-2
Saturday
The Boston Bruins hosted the Montreal Canadiens for Game Five of their series. The Bruins took the series lead (3-2) with a 4-2 game over the Habs. Game Six is tonight at 7:30 (EST) on NBCSN in Montreal.
In a series of two heated rivals things start to get heated and sometimes water is needed?
#Bruins F Shawn Thornton fined $2820.52, the max under Game 5, for squirting water at Subban last night.

In the battle of California the Anaheim Ducks recalled 20 year-old goaltender John Gibson due to goalie injuries. Gibson made his NHL playoff debut and according to Elias Sports Bureau became the youngest (20 years and 330 days) goaltender in NHL history to post a shutout in his NHL debut when he shutout the Los Angeles Kings. Another note from that game was seeing Greg Wyshynski from Yahoo!’s Puck Daddy take a pie in the face from Kings mascot Bailey after Wyshynski picked the San Jose Sharks to beat the Kings in the first round.
Over in Minsk…
Germany defeated Kazakhstan 2-1
Norway shutout Italy 3-0
Latvia over Finland 3-2
Sweden shutout Denmark 3-0
USA defeated Switzerland 3-2
Canada over Slovakia 4-1
Sunday
The New York Rangers took on the Pittsburgh Penguins in Game Six and saw Martin St. Louis, whose mother passed away just a few days ago, score the opening goal of the game on Mother’s Day.
The Rangers went on to defeat the Penguins 3-1 and force a Game Seven set for tomorrow (Tuesday, May 13) at 7:00 p.m. EST.
Last night saw Game Five in the Western Conference matchup between the Minnesota Wild and the Chicago Blackhawks give the Blackhawks the 3-2 lead in the series. Chicago defeated the Wild 2-1 thanks to a third period goal from Captain Jonathan Toews.
