Brendan Shanahan Meets With The Media

Well, it is Toronto and the Leafs. Everything has to be full of drama.

I feel Dubas won't be out of a job for long. Maybe the Larry Brooks scenario might play out--Dubas to Penguins with his favourite coach to follow.

exor54

Wow. So even though Dubas wanted to come back as GM, Shanny fired him because on his drive home his 'feelings' about Dubas as a GM going forward 'changed?!'. WTH.

I hope Dubas lands another GM job soon (if that's what he and his family are comfortable with), and leaves the snake pit of Toronto.

Paul

from Matt Larkin of The Daily Faceoff,

Who are the most logical candidates to step in as Torontos next GM? Consider these names, listed alphabetically.

Marc Bergevin

Bergevin would easily be the most polarizing name to pull from the list of candidates, next to dusting off Stan Bowman. He handed out many of the contracts that took on water and dragged the Montreal Canadiens into their current rebuilding period. He was also the one calling out Logan Maillouxs name at the end of the 2021 NHL Drafts first round after Mailloux had renounced the idea of being drafted in the wake of being convicted of a crime of a sexual nature. On the other hand, Bergevin guided the Habs through an era that included multiple division titles, an Eastern Conference Final birth and a trip to the 2021 Stanley Cup Final. Bergevin has worked under Luc Robitaille as a senior advisor for the L.A. Kings in the last season and a half, and Shanahan and Robitaille are friends as former Detroit Red Wings teammates. So Shanahan would trust a candidate recommended by Robitaille. Bergevin checks the experienced box.

Kris Draper

Draper would qualify as somewhat of an off-the-radar hire, but dont sleep on him. He has worked in the Red Wings front office for more than a decade, sponging up expertise from the likes of Ken Holland, Jim Nill and, now, Steve Yzerman. Draper is blocked; theres no way hell unseat the legendary Stevie Y for the Detroit GM job anytime soon. Draper brings diverse experience, having been a special assistant to the GM but transitioning to director of amateur scouting, a post hes held for several years. Hes a media-friendly personality who happens to be from Toronto and has a long friendship with former teammate Shanahan.

I don't think it's gonna be Draper.  Shawn Horcroff would be the logical choice as he is the GM of GRG.  If Yzerman feels that Draper can be GM material, I would, in my logical mind (HA!), make Draper GM of GRG and see how he operates.

Frank Seravalli@frank_seravalli·40mBrendan Shanahan's timeline outlining negotiations with Kyle Dubas is a bombshell.

After Dubas' press conf (against Shanahan's wishes), Shanahan had a "shift in thinking." And when Dubas' agent presented a "new financial package," Shanahan said he "got to a different place."317147697.5K

Frank Seravalli@frank_seravalliIn other words, if you read between the lines, Shanahan believes Dubas overplayed his hand and the Maple Leafs cut the chord.

Paul

from Jonas Siegel of The Athletic,

Its not only Kyle Dubas leaving the Maple Leafs.

Jason Spezza resigned on the same Friday morning that Dubas and the Leafs parted ways, per a source close to Spezza. He was hired last summer, not long after announcing his retirement as a player, as the special assistant to the GM aka the special assistant to Dubas.

Its not surprising then that he would leave alongside Dubas.

Spezza spent most of this past season right next to Dubas. They watched practices together. They traveled together. They sat next to each other in the same press box suite.

You lose again far sooner than you should in the playoffs, your boss tells you not to do something and you do it anyway, and your agent comes and tells your boss that you don't make enough money and you need a raise.

dca

I don't think you guys understand what happened in Toronto's locker clear-out on Monday.

I watched Chris Johnson on the Steve Dangle Podcast a couple days ago and what Dubas did was a bombshell (about the 3:55 mark) and it changed everything.

teldar

I don't have the hours I would need to figure this out. What did Dubas do that was a "bombshell"? I watched the video for several minutes and still don't have any idea.

dcateldar

He said that he wasn't sure he wanted to be the GM next year because he had to discuss it with his family first. Then took two days before emailing that he wanted to be back while having his agent demand more than was previously agreed to.

Go tell your employer that you're not sure you want to re-up on your contract then go quiet for 2 days and then email them you have decided you want to be back while demanding a 50% raise and more control over company decisions.

That's dropping a bombshell.

Steeb

I just hope that, when the fire sale happens in Toronto, Stevie doesn't do anything to help out. I really don't want ANY of those guys (maybe Marner) on the Wings. But Stevie doesn't like floaters, so it might not be terribly likely.

dcaSteeb

I'll gladly take Marner or Matthews--esp if I am paying for a 1 or 2 year rental prices. Nylander at present value is fine too--his issue is that he will be due a large raise.

You want to give me a 98-99 point winger that was a Selke front-runner who just turned 26 yrs old...at 75 cents on the dollar... Okay. Do you personally want me to drive the guys you got back to Toronto? You want to give me a (turning 26 yrs old) generational talent who was asked to hit and block shots instead of focus on offense.

It was poor coaching which misused these guys plus poor roster constructions.

The issue is Detroit doesn't have any All Stars to move the other way (Larkin has a NTC) for the kind of player Toronto is seeking in return.
