Brad Richards- Buyout Or Not

06/27/2013 at 12:43pm EDT

from Larry Brooks of the New York Post,

Richards, who struggled through the worst season of his career in the absence of training camp and a defined offseason during which he was involved in CBA negotiations, has seven years with an annual cap charge of $6.67 million remaining on his contract.

There is a sense that the Rangers would prefer not to exercise the buyout but want to retain the option in case a player becomes unexpectedly available to them leading up to July 4 and the club would thus need to free up Richards’ cap space in order to add him.

The club could defer the buyout until next summer's final amnesty period but a 2013-14 injury could complicate matters by rendering Richards ineligible for a buy-out This would thus leave the Rangers vulnerable to substantial cap-recapture penalties should the 33-year-old center opt to retire at any point before the end of the contract that runs through 2019-20.
