Gordie's Elbows stand high.
HippyDave's comment made me laugh. I struggle to speak with my son and his friends about how great players of my generation were - the guys who are my age (Bossy, Trottier and of course Bobby Orr, Guy Lafleur etc) but I even struggle to share my thoughts of how great Gordie Howe was (as well as Beliveau, Richard, Hull, etc.) because while I did get to see most of them play - I was too young to appreciate it. I think my son and I have seen Alex Ovechkin play in person at least 30 times. He will be telling my future grandchildren about him and others of his generation as well. I can recall seeing Gordie Howe playing one time in person. I was in college and when the Hartford Whalers came to town in the fall of 1979 - I saw Gordie play a game at the Nassau Coliseum. I recall the Isles winning - but being mesmerized by Gordie. I remember he (of course) had no helmet and looked like an old man playing. But no one messed with him, I remember it being a quiet game. I was looking to see if anyone would mess with him - or - if he would mess with someone. But you could tell that you were being blessed to have been to a game to see him. To my recollection - this is the only time I ever saw him play. I bet Ovi is not playing in the NHL at 52 years old - but - you never know! :)
