For how long did every agent, every player -- often orchestrated by the union -- drive every contract negotiation to the highest possible dollar, whether or not the team offering the contract could truly afford it?
We've always said, don't blame Shawn Horcoff for signing a six-year, $33-million deal. Or Scott Gomez (seven years, $51 million). Or Wade Redden (six years, $39 million.) I would have signed it; you would have signed it.
That does not mean, however, that there are no repercussions for draining far more from the game than one's value as a player deems appropriate. As a whole, that's what players have done: Taken more from the coffers than the game can afford to give them over the years, and now the pendulum swings back.
