Action Needed In Columbus

from Michael Arace of the Columbus Dispatch,

It is time for general manager Jarmo Kekalainen to do something.

We all know the patient, long-term plan set forth by Kekalainen and his boss, John Davidson, the president of hockey operations. “Brick by Brick” T-shirts appeared last year. They have a core of young players they want to see grow within the system. We all get it.

“We are the 5th line” T-shirts appeared this year, and Alexander Wennberg should be wearing one. He has not proved he is an NHL-caliber player, and he is on the ice 15 minutes a night. This does no service to him or the team. He should be building his confidence with minor-league Springfield.

Maybe Wennberg goes the way of Nikita Filatov — or maybe he goes the way of Ryan Johansen, who, you might recall, did not have an illustrious rookie season and has turned out pretty well. The point here, though, is not about the rookie. He is not the problem; he is merely a symptom.

The Jackets are stagnant, and they need a stir.
