The Broke NHL

The Fans are supposed to go along with ads on the sweaters because the NHL owners are so poor they need the extra ad revenue. Are the billionaire owers really that behind on their bills they need the extra revenue? I doubt it.

There are a few teams struggling to survive due to missmanagement and owners that don't know how to run a team. Maybe they shouldn't be owners then.

Will they also join in having ads on their clothing when on TV for that extra revenue? How about it Gary? Will you and the owners put your faces on TV wearing ads? Somehow I doubt it.

Put up or shut up about ads.

As this season is the last season I will ever buy a sweater, I’m thinking Vrana has the inside track. Altho, if Mo has a season where he makes any kind of Calder noise, he may be the guy.

I think the ads look like trash and it’s sad they are doing it.  I understand the economics of it but also think there are way better ways to save/raise money.

Keep it off the consumer jerseys.

Game worn jerseys: forever stained by ads.

And lastly, this is a step that *should* be temporary, if the excuse is its for gaining back lost revenue from COVID. But we all know its not. There is no going back now.

“We can sell 80% of the screen and they’ll be ok!” where as before sounds like, to me at least, “Once we fill up 80% of the screen the little f’s will start to seize, so that’s as much as we can sell….

This is what happens when a gate-driven league (ie, please the fans) turns into a corporate-driven league (ie, please the asshats). People are turning away from sports for a lot of reasons, but I’m getting annoyed by how they jam adverts into every spare second on the air. Anyone watched baseball this year? Full 30-second adds btw hitters now sometimes. It’s insane. And I’m sure Gary will sell every bit of ad space he can find (except, of course. for the avenue suggested above). And Bally really needs to work on their on-screen scoreboard.

Well said Sir…err… Majesty…err..Royal Grand Exalted Poobah.

Only thing I would change is the picture of the LiL gary. The ads on his suit should be all the betting “partners” he sold the league’s sole to. hmmm

Interesting the players are never mentioned in this as if they’re saying oh no let’s keep the jersey pure, too much digital ads, why are we into gambling revenues, etc.  or maybe they enjoy a big cut of that top line, and are happy to live through the struggle of a fat wallet.

Nobody gives two squats what my opinion is, but that’s an AMAZING photo RGEP.  I hope it makes its way around the internet.

I kind of choked on my breakfast this morning when I saw the Bettman photo.  Looking at it again here, I noticed the fine details in the advertising chosen.  Well done.

The pic took about an hour to make mainly due to looking up which ads to put on him and then searching for the logos. It’s cut and paste without putting any time in it.

RGEP is from Dilbert back in the 90s when they had a contest deal on the web for Dogbert’s new ruling class. You got to claim your title. So RGEP is what I thought up and that popped into my head when I signed up here.

Its the principle of the thing. The Owners, GMs, and coaches won’t be seen with ads on them.

Didn’t even think about the gambling ads. There will be only one if there is of course. Ballys.

Here I thought RGEP was from The Honeymooners, which many of you may have never watched.

Ralph Kramden belonged to a club….

I haven’t seen it in baseball but those “in-game” 15-30 second spots in football and hockey annoy me.

What I am more worried about is the pro wrestling approach where those commercials take up a majority of the screen and the remainder is left for live action. If it ever gets to that point with major sports, it’ll be time for me to find something else to do.

Originally Grand Pubah for me was from looney tunes with Sylvester the cat being sent out to get the kangaroo by the lead cat. The Flintstones had a Pubah if I remember right for the Water Buffalo lodge too.

They had those last year, maybe 2x a period they would stick a quick plug in for Ford or whatever, I recall Mickey talking and Daniels cutting him off.

Great post Poobah! And picture as always.

This is on the owners for hiring a lawyer/business man to run their league.  Someone should explain to them, without us the fans there is no NHL. With gambling, ads, lockouts… more fans are dropping out.

I know there is most likely not a better Ism for our society but capitalism propagandation is ugly and out control.

Twenty or thirty years from now, the team logo is gonna be reduced to a four inch patch on the right shoulder of the jersey.

Every league is run by a pencil neck lawyer, a) they’re smart and run the business (which is what hockey is) effectively, and b) they take the ire of the fans for the collective owners, he’s a punching bag, the league office face, the spokesperson.

Are you suggesting if you were an owner, and paid billions for a team, you would hire some likeable schmo that has no experience running a $4Bln business, that employs 1000s, and/or that fans saw past them to you for the hard decisions that have to be made in business?

Interesting, you also ignore the players who are behind this with their 50% cut of that fatter top line.

As far as “isms” to call our society ugly and such, you have seen the jerseys overseas right, what we’re now replicating? And they play in front of about every social, governmental and economic system over there right? I’m sure they’re also ugly and out of control.
