2010 Leafs' Draft Class Update

11/08/2010 at 12:47pm EST

Brad Ross
Round 2 – 43rd Overall

Ross is at it once again this season. After posting 68 points and 203 PIMs in 71 games last season, the Leafs’ first pick in the 2010 draft has 17 points and 44 PIMs in 16 games this season with the Portland Winterhawks. Not only that but he is +12 on the season thus far. He even has more points than teammate Ryan Johansen (15 points), who was taken 4th Overall this year.

Greg McKegg
Round 3 – 62nd Overall

McKegg had no business going in the 3rd Round, especially after putting up 85 points in 67 games last season. This season has been no different. McKegg leads the Erie Otters with 26 points in 19 games and sits 11th in OHL scoring.

Sondre Olden
Round 3 – 79th Overall

Olden dominated at the U18 level last year with MODO (26 points in 8 games) and with Norway (22 points in 5 games). But when he moved up to the U20 level last season, he began averaging less than 1 point per game (27 points in 32 games). This year he’s playing with MODO U20 team in the SuperElit once again and has put up 7 points in 12 games. He has a 6’ 3” frame but is only 172 lbs. He needs to grow into that frame before he begins to dominate at the higher levels.

Petter Granberg

Round 4 – 116th Overall

Another 6’ 3” player drafted by the Leafs. Only this one is a stay-at-home d-man. Granberg is 205 lbs already and still growing. What people don’t realize about Granberg is that the only reason he did not have more SEL experience going into the draft was because he was for Skelleftea, a team that boasted David Rundblad, Tim Erixon and Adam Larsson. Making it to the big team with guys like that on the roster isn’t easy. Look for him to get significantly more time to play in the SEL this year.

Sam Carrick
Round 5 – 144th Overall

Carrick has is on his way to becoming a 3rd line Center in the NHL. He’s great on the draw, great in his own end and he’s got some game on the offensive side of the rink. This season he has 5 points in 8 games for the Brampton Battalion. He had 96 PIMs last year and is on his way to a similar total this year. If he can continue to develop, this kid can be a heart and soul player in the NHL.

Daniel Brodin

Round 5 – 146th Overall

Brodin’s never been a point producer. But he brings a lot of intangibles. There is a lot of intensity built into his game along with speed and grit. He drives the net and battles along the boards. He’s also only 172 lbs and for a guy who’s game is built on grinding and battling, size is everything. Brodin needs to continue working on adding strength to his game. This is his 2nd season in the SEL and he could find himself playing for the Marlies as early as next season.

Josh Nicholls
Round 7 – 182nd Overall

Nicholls has been one of the surprise stories in the WHL this year. He was projected to be a bottom 6 guy at best before the draft, which is why he went in the 7th Round. Even still, Nicholls put up 48 points in 71 games with the Saskatoon Blades last season. This season, however, Nicholls is bringing his offensive game. Already he has 20 points in 17 games, tied with Quinten Howden who was taken 25th overall. Nicholls totals have him ranked 33rd in WHL scoring. Add to that the fact that Nicholls is an excellent penalty killer and you get one of the sleeper picks of the 2010 draft. It’s early though. Nicholls needs to keep it up.
