Report: Sabres Open To Dealing Roy, Stafford, Boyes

TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun reported on the Canadian sports network today that the Buffalo Sabres are looking to change the makeup of their top two forward lines via the trade route.

[A trade] will be the next move for the Buffalo Sabres if Darcy Regier has his way.  I’ve talked to other teams around the league over the last week.  Regier is doing his homework.  He’s talking trade with teams.  What he’d like to do is move a top 6 forward in return for a top 6 forward.  Easier said than done.  Drew Stafford, Derek Roy, Brad Boyes - those are names that I’ve been told are in play for the Buffalo Sabres.  Not every team in the league is going to want to move a top 6 for a top 6, but that’s what he’s trying to do.

The Sabres currently sit in 11th place in the Eastern Conference with a 19-21-5 record and are 7 points out of a playoff position.

Is Darcy seriously trying to characterize Roy Stafford or Boyes as Top 6 forwards while talking with other teams during phone calls? I have to hear that—must be better than listening to Crank Yankers or the Jerky Boys. Oh boy I wonder if he’ll discuss our All-Star Olympic Hero goalie as well. Delusional comedy at it’s best (or worst)...hahaha

Sorry, Don, but if you don’t think Roy and Stafford are top six forwards, it’s you who’s clueless - not Regier. Also, before this season Boyes was a perennial 50-point guy at worst, which also makes him a valid top six forward.

I would take any of them for the Red Wings’ top six, but I don’t think Buffalo gets to ask for a top six in return from Detroit, so it’s not going to happen there.

I see the Blackhawks (and possibly the Preds) making a huge push for Roy.
Both teams need help down the middle pretty badly.

Good point.  I’ve always liked Roy’s defensive game.  Pretty stale right now though.
Stafford is one of those classic guys who will explode on another team; you know, the super athletic young guy that can’t be consistent or mentally focused: Ryan, Stepan, Turris.  All of them will be a big deal over the next five years, but they’ve had some real bumps on the way.  But I can definitely see Stafford suddenly dominating in a new environment with the right linemates.
Pretty bitter down in Buffalo, by the sounds of it.  Such high hopes, so shitty.  It is still early though, and sometimes adversity like this is exactly what a team needs before it gets really hot down the stretch.  Does anyone think that Miller actually forgot how to play goal?
