Yzerman Will Ask His Players To Consider Wearing A Visor

from Damien Cristodero of the St. Petersburg Times,

Steve Yzerman at the end of the season will ask Lightning players who do not wear visors to consider adding them for 2011-12.

“We don’t want people getting injured,” Tampa Bay’s general manager said. “We want to keep their eyesight and noses in place, so it’s something we would like to push moving forward.”

Yzerman’s statement came two days after C Vinny Lecavalier was hit in the right eye with a stick blade during Sunday’s victory over the Blackhawks.

Is this where I say, “Steve Yzerman speaks out about wearing visors only when it has affected someone that plays on his team.  Why hasn’t he been speaking out on the use of visors after Manny Malhotra was injured?!”

Or, “Yzerman didn’t wear a visor for the majority of his career.  He’s a hypocrite for asking his players to wear them, now.”

Wow did that make me laugh.

Anyway, I don’t understand why visors haven’t been grandfathered in already like helmets were.  I would imagine that time is coming soon and I hope so.  It’s dumb enough to play without one in a rec league, let alone the NHL.

Shouldn’t Yzerman have questioned why the rest of the league isn’t wearing visors while ignoring the fact that many on his team don’t?

Stevie had to take a puck to the orbital bone against NSH to “convince” him to wear one after basically a career without. I’d say the GM is looking out for his players, it’s kind of up to the GMs of the other 29 teams to do the same.
The same could be said in regards to skate guards, it’s up to the player to decide on but easily could be a team wide rule to protect from numerous injuries from pucks to the skate.

With the speed of game and lighter composite sticks I’m surprised there are not more eye injuries.  Makes sense to mandate visors, all these guys grow up wearing one in one form or another anyway.
