VEGAS (June 24, 2019) – Vegas Golden Knights General Manager George McPhee announced today, June 24, that the team has signed forward William Karlsson to an eight-year contract through the 2026-27 season worth an average annual value of $5.9 million.
Karlsson, 26, finished his second season with the Golden Knights with 56 points (24 G, 32 A) to go with 16 penalty minutes. He finished with 13 multi-point games, including three games where he recorded three points.
The Marsta, Sweden native recorded his 150th career point on December 6 and now has 184 career points (85 G, 99 A) through five seasons in the NHL. Karlsson is the only player in franchise history to have appeared in every regular season game and postseason contest, a total of 191 games. He was originally acquired by the Golden Knights during the 2017 Expansion Draft.

William Karlsson Is An Offer Sheet Candidate
by Paul on 06/03/19 at 01:28 PM ET

from David Schoen of the Las Vegas Review-Journal,
When William Karlsson stood in front of his locker at City National Arena in late April, he twice made reference to the possibility of not returning to the Golden Knights.
This isn’t to say the restricted free-agent center is leaving town, so don’t freak out just yet.
But it does illustrate that even the perpetually glass-half-full Karlsson recognizes the Knights’ salary cap constraints.
“Hopefully we can get a long-term deal going, and hopefully I’ll stand here in the fall,” he said following the postseason. “This is where I want to play. Hopefully I’ll be here for next year, too.”
Karlsson’s future could go a number of directions, from that new contract he mentioned to an unpleasant arbitration hearing or — gasp! — even a trade.
He’s also a prime candidate to receive the seldom-used offer sheet, which could put a serious crimp in general manager pro tem George McPhee’s best-laid plans for the summer.

Arbitration Day For William Karlsson
by Paul on 08/04/18 at 07:20 AM ET

from David Schoen of the Las Vegas Review-Journal,
Karlsson is seeking $6.5 million annually in arbitration, while the Knights offered $3.5 million annually, figures that were confirmed by the Review-Journal on Thursday.
Karlsson’s agent, Michael Deutsch, and the Knights can continue to negotiate a new contract before the hearing, which begins at 6 a.m. Pacific time and is expected to last several hours....
The 25-year-old center made $1 million last season when he led the Western Conference champions in scoring with 78 points and received the Lady Byng Trophy as the league’s most gentlemanly player.
The Knights currently have more than $13.1 million in salary cap space, according to CapFriendly.com....
The last player to go to arbitration after a breakout season similar to Karlsson’s was Ottawa’s Mike Hoffman with a plus-24 goal increase from the previous year.
Hoffman was awarded a $2 million salary after asking for $3.4 million, and that 2015 ruling, which leaned in favor of the team, could serve as a precedent in Karlsson’s case.

How William Karlsson Ended Up In Las Vegas
by Paul on 05/23/18 at 08:47 AM ET

from Michael Arace of the Columbus Dispatch,
The deal Kekalainen cut with Vegas went like this: The Knights took the contract of the injured David Clarkson, who had two more years and $10.5 million remaining and was physically incapable of playing hockey. The Knights also got a first-round pick in 2017 and a second-round pick in 2019. In exchange, they promised to pass on forward Josh Anderson and backup goaltender Joonas Korpisalo in the expansion draft, and they “agreed” to take Karlsson.
This is a sensitive subject for Jackets fans. I’m a bit more sanguine. Karlsson had scored zero goals in his last 45 regular-season games with the Jackets. He was part of the price the Jackets had to pay to unload Clarkson’s contract. As it turns out, it might have been too high a price — but there is a return.
Had Clarkson’s contract not come off the Jackets’ cap, Kekalainen would be hard pressed to take care of the free agents who need new contracts. Artemi Panarin and Sergei Bobrovsky are just the start of a long list of to-dos that are more doable with Clarkson off the books.

A Look At William Karlsson
by Paul on 03/16/18 at 10:16 AM ET

from John Matisz of the Toronto Sun,
Karlsson’s meteoric rise is the least anticipated development on the most surprising and successful expansion team in pro sports history. And it’s wildly complicated.
There is no denying the absurdity of the situation: Karlsson is on pace for 42 goals and 30 assists.
Traditionally, 40-goal seasons in the NHL are reserved for household names with a track record of sniping. Ordinary players like Karlsson — who averaged eight goals and 22 points per 82 games for the Ducks and the Columbus Blue Jackets in his previous two-plus NHL seasons — do not.
Karlsson, who last scored 20 goals in his final year of junior in Sweden, has essentially quintupled his NHL goal rate and almost quadrupled his point rate this season. His overnight success story checks out on a granular level, too: Karlsson has contributed an additional 1.3 points per 60 minutes of 5-on-5 ice time this season.
