Vinny Doing It All

from Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail,
Nowadays, you’d be hard-pressed to find a more complete player. He scores, he sets up plays, he leads and he fights too. Lecavalier had a memorable scrap with the Calgary Flames’ Jarome Iginla in the 2004 Stanley Cup final, and held his own against one of the strongest players in the league. Last month, amid Tampa’s struggles, he fought in back-to-back games — against the Washington Capitals’ Shaone Morrison, in which he received a penalty for instigating the fight; and then the next night, against the Philadelphia Flyers’ Scott Hartnell. As most players will attest, when a team’s best player is also prepared to do some of the dirty work, it can lift a team’s morale right out of the gutter.

Brad Richards Off to Career Best Start
by Alanah McGinley on 11/19/07 at 06:50 PM ET

From Erik Erlendsson at The Tampa Tribune,
Richards is off to his best start through 19 games and is on pace for a career high in goals and right on pace to match his career best in points. And while the point production is a big part of Richards’ game, it’s not the sole indicator of how he’s playing.
In watching Richards on the ice this season, he looks quicker, he looks stronger, he appears to have more confidence and seems more intense, noticeable in his fight Wednesday against Carolina’s Justin Williams that left him with a cut on his lip.
“I feel a lot better, I do,” Richards said. “Sometimes you can’t control the points and it would be nice to bury a few more chances, but overall I feel way better, way stronger so I feel a lot more confident going into this part of the season. Whether or not my start - and I think it’s been a good start and that’s obviously going to help - but I feel different and I feel a lot better than I did last year.”

LECAVALIER, NABOKOV AND ERAT NAMED NHL ‘THREE STARS’ OF THE WEEK
FIRST STAR—VINCENT LECAVALIER, C, TAMPA BAY LIGHTNING
Lecavalier earned the NHL’s First Star award for the second consecutive week, leading the League in scoring with eight points (four goals, four assists) in just two games. Lecavalier tied a career high with five points (three goals, two assists) in a 6-1 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes Nov. 14, also matching franchise records for points in a period (2-2—4 in the second period) and single-game plus-minus (+5). He notched three points (one goal, two assists) in a 5-2 victory over the Washington Capitals Nov. 16, setting a franchise mark by tallying multiple points in his seventh consecutive game (6-13—19). Lecavalier has moved into first place in the NHL scoring race with 32 points (13 goals, 19 assists), two ahead of Detroit’s Henrik Zetterberg (14-16—30) and Pittsburgh’s Sidney Crosby (11-19—30). The Lightning (10-8-1, 21 points) carry a five-game winning streak into tonight’s contest at Atlanta.

Line Of The Day

via the St. Peterburg Times,
Pat Burns considers it fortunate that, living in Port Charlotte, he regularly attends Lightning games at the St. Pete Times Forum.
Watching Vinny Lecavalier turn into a superstar hasn’t been bad either, the former Devils coach said, and Wednesday’s 6-1 victory over the Hurricanes confirmed what he long has believed.
“If I was to start a hockey franchise and I had the first pick overall, I’d take Vinny,” Burns said. “I’ve said he is the top player in the NHL.”

from the St. Peterburg Times,
Here in the prime of Vincent Lecavalier, let it be agreed there is more to the man than any one of us had reason to suspect.
He is bigger than he has ever been. He is better. There is more strength to him than before, more character, more impact. He has blossomed into a man of a substance. He has developed into something special.
It is true of Lecavalier, player.
It is also true of Lecavalier, person.

Tortorella Frustrated
by Alanah McGinley on 10/30/07 at 11:41 AM ET

From Erik Erlendsson at The Tampa Tribune,
After the game, Lightning coach John Tortorella didn’t hide his frustration with his team’s play in an expletive-laden, two-answer session with the media.
‘We were undisciplined, but up until then we had one player play, our goalie,’ Tortorella said. ‘Our goalie gives us a chance after two periods and we can’t put 20 minutes of disciplined hard hockey together, so we’re not even close tonight, not even close, so we don’t deserve anything. We spent more time looking at referees for calls ... moaning about it instead of playing, so we don’t deserve to win tonight.
‘It’s very frustrating to see one guy show up tonight and play, and that’s our goalie. That’s it.’

Brad Lukowich, Entrepreneur

An interview from the Tampa Tribune, with Lukowich:
Why start a record company in the first place?
I’m a terrible golfer. I found that I had a lot of spare time during the lockout just sitting around the house, and all I was doing was listening to music. [...]And now your entrepreneurial spirit has led you to founding a restaurant with some buddies in Dallas. How’d that happen?
Literally, we were sitting around one day and I was like, ‘Man, we should open something that when I retire, when you guys are done, we all need to have some way to stay connected.’ That’s one thing that kills me, losing touch with people back home.
continued… including Lukowich’s transition to playing back in Tampa, and more

Clock Ticking In Tampa
by Paul on 10/04/07 at 12:19 PM ET

from the St. Peterburg Times,
Is this the last season four of the league’s best players - St. Louis, Vinny Lecavalier, Brad Richards and Dan Boyle - are together as a group?
“If you want to think about that, go ahead,” St. Louis said. “It’s not something we’re going to think about.”
But general manager Jay Feaster admitted, “The clock is ticking.”
And perhaps only a deep playoff run can postpone the alarm.

Tampa’s Injury Epidemic
by Alanah McGinley on 10/02/07 at 03:40 AM ET

From Erik Erlendsson at the Tampa Tribune
The training room inside the Lightning locker room resembled a corner coffee house during the preseason - it’s where everyone seemed to assemble.
And it wasn’t all just for social hour.
Tampa Bay’s media relations staff found itself dealing with daily injury reports as much as any other request since training camp opened Sept. 13. It got to be so epidemic-like that by the end of the second exhibition game - and on more than one occasion since - Lightning coach John Tortorella informed his players not to discuss anything related to injuries with members of the media.

All Lecavalier

Vincent Lecavalier participated in an NHL tele-conference today…
Q. Do you ever reflect back on the lockout and did it spoil the momentum of Tampa? Do you think if there had been no lockout, you might have picked up where you left off?
VINCENT LECAVALIER: Well, obviously we had it broken a little bit. Because after you’ve won a Cup, you’re excited to come back into the season. I had to go play in Russia. Guys were playing in Europe. Some guys weren’t playing at all. Yeah, I think it definitely didn’t help. But there’s no excuse for anything. Everybody started again after that, the next year after that, so..

Dan Boyle Out 4-6 Weeks
by Alanah McGinley on 09/23/07 at 08:29 PM ET
Comments (0)
From USA Today,
Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Dan Boyle’s severed tendons in his wrist area were surgically repaired Sunday and he’s projected to be out of the lineup four to six weeks. Boyle was injured in a freak accident after Saturday’s loss to Washington when his skate fell off its hook and sliced his wrist.
“The doctors who did the surgery today said it was a cut with surgical precision,” said Tampa Bay general manager Jay Feaster.
According to Feaster, Boyle told him that he put his skates on the hook, as he always does, and was talking to teammate Doug Janik when it came crashing down. Feaster said members of the media heard the lid of Boyle’s cubicle slam shut, and they theorize that the vibration knocked the skate off the hook.

From TSN,
Tampa Bay Lightning defenceman Dan Boyle will undergo surgery on Sunday following a freak accident at the end of Saturday’s 2-1 pre-season loss to the Washington Capitals.
Boyle was injured in the Lightning locker room when distracted while hanging up his skates. A skate slipped off of the hook and hit him in his left wrist, cutting a tendon.
He was to have surgery on Sunday and will be out of action for several weeks.
