The Olympics May Be In The Back Of Ryan Malone’s Mind After Signing A PTO With The Wild
by Paul on 09/01/17 at 09:19 AM ET
Comments (0)
from Michael Russo of Russo's Rants,
While there's no doubt Malone would love to prove himself in camp to the point he could sign an NHL two-way with the Wild or another team, this tryout appears to be intended to show Wild management he warrants an AHL deal.
While it's believed Pittsburgh and New Jersey has also shown interest in signing Malone to an AHL contract, Iowa is likely his preference because he could be closer to his two children and fiancee.
If he signs an AHL deal and not an NHL deal, Malone would be eligible to participate in the Winter Games in February in South Korea. Sources say he has discussed this possibility with USA Hockey in recent days.

Ryan Malone Discusses His DUI Charge
by Paul on 09/08/14 at 03:41 PM ET
Comments (0)
from Larry Brooks of the New York Post,
“I’d like to publicly apologize to Mr. Vinik and the Tampa organization,” Malone said, referencing club owner Jeff Vinik. “They’re a first-class organization, Mr. Vinik has done so much for the community there. I obviously wish them the best.
“The fans were great, so I want to say thanks to them for their continued support.”
Malone pleaded no-contest to the DUI charge and agreed to a pre-trial diversion program on the drug charge. The cocaine possession felony charge will be dismissed if Malone successfully completes the program that includes community service.
Malone, who was placed in Stage Two of the NHL/NHLPA Behavioral Health program upon his arrest, said he was reinstated “a few days ago” by the program’s physicians.
“Obviously I made a mistake, and I obviously have to admit that,” Malone said. “Thankfully, luckily, no one got hurt. It’s changed my life for the better and my family’s life.
“I’m looking to prove myself, looking to show what kind of a person I am on and off the ice.”

The New York Rangers Will Take A Look At UFA Ryan Malone
by Paul on 09/07/14 at 06:32 PM ET
Comments (0)
from Larry Brooks of the New York Post,
Ryan Malone, 34 years old and in need of a second chance, apparently will get one from big-hearted general manager Glen Sather and the Rangers.
The Post has learned Malone, a free agent who was bought out by the Lightning after a June arrest for DUI and possession of cocaine following a fallow 2013-14 season, will join the Blueshirts’ informal skates at the club’s practice facility on Monday in advance of formal contract talks between the team and agent Mike Liut....
A well-placed source told The Post that Malone — who has been placed in Stage Two of the NHL/NHLPA’s Substance Abuse/Behavioral Health Program — has been cleared by the league to sign a contract. The Post also has been told Malone is not likely to face league discipline in the form of a fine or suspension, though he may have to meet with commissioner Gary Bettman and/or deputy Bill Daly to receive an official go-ahead.

Ryan Malone Pleads No Contest To DUI Charges
by Paul on 08/19/14 at 10:44 AM ET
Comments (0)
via Joe Smith of the Tampa Bay Times,
Former Tampa Bay Lightning wing Ryan Malone pled no contest to a DUI charge in court Tuesday morning.
He will enter a pretrial intervention program related to a drug charge.
With the pretrial intervention program, Malone's charge of cocaine possession will be dismissed if he completes the requirements.
Malone, 34, was pulled over April 11 after he struck a curb on W Platt Street in Tampa. Police found a plastic bag with 1.3 grams of cocaine in his pocket, but Malone told them he didn't know where it came from, according to court documents.
Malone's contract was bought out by the Lightning in June, making him an unrestricted free agent.

Dreger’s ‘Off-Season Watch’: on Heatley and Malone, Kesler’s situation, Hawks, etc.
by George Malik on 06/25/14 at 02:46 PM ET
Comments (0)
ESPN's Pierre LeBrun posited a set of "Rumblings," and TSN's summarized a similar amount of rumor fodder posited by Darren Dreger:
Patience is a Virtue: Minnesota Wild forward Dany Heatley and former Tampa Bay Lightning forward Ryan Malone may have to be patient in free agency according to Dreger. Dreger says their willingness to take one-year contracts will draw attention from more teams. The Lightning used their second compliance buyout on Malone on Tuesday while Heatley will become an unrestricted free-agent on July 1.
Canucks Complex Dealings: The Vancouver Canucks are still trying to trade Ryan Kesler but this is a complicated negotiation. It's believed Kesler has identified just two teams in the Chicago Blackhawks and Anaheim Ducks. That puts rookie general manager Jim Benning and the management of the Canucks in a tough spot because they're just negiotioation with the two teams. Maybe it's possible that the Canucks try to pull in their horns in an effort to encourage Kelser to expand his list.
Blackhawks Hope to Keep the Band Together: GM Stan Bowman and the Chicago Blackhawks are very eager to make sure the star component remains intact for a lengthy period of time. We're talking about how the new CBA is going to impact the superstar model of player and certainly Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews qualify as such. No longer is it allowed to frontload and go with that 10, 12 or 15-year mega-deal. Now we know it's a maximum of eight years so it's not inconceivable that, as long as the salary cap climbs to around $75 million in 2016 that Kane and Toews could come in around $11-12 million each.
The "Off-Season Watch" continues, and Dreger reports that Daniel Alfredsson's going to be "flexible" with his decision-making timeline. It is possible that, should the Boston Bruins don't re-sign Jarome Iginla, both Iginla and Alfredsson could be Wings next season.

Ryan Malone May Have Played His Last Game For The Tampa Bay Lightning
by Paul on 06/13/14 at 11:08 AM ET
Comments (0)
from Joe Smith of the Tampa Bay Times,
The veteran wing is a prime candidate for a compliance buyout, with Tampa Bay having one left after using its first on Vinny Lecavalier last summer. The buyout period begins Sunday, or two days after the Stanley Cup final ends, whichever is later, through June 30.
Neither Malone, 34, nor his agent, would comment, but he realizes he's a candidate....
"Obviously injuries he's had, some serious injuries over the past three, four years since I've been with the organization, have limited the number of games that he could play," Yzerman said. "It does take its toll on a player. We're taking everything into consideration for the offseason in improving our team and we're looking at all different (options), whether it be the draft, free agency, trades, buyouts. We'll take it all into consideration."
There are several reasons the Lightning could consider buying out the final year of Malone's contract, saving a $4.5 million cap hit, by spreading two-thirds of his $2.5 million salary ($1.67 million) evenly over two years.
There's Malone's legal issues, an arraignment scheduled Monday in Tampa as he faces charges of cocaine possession and driving under the influence stemming from April 12 arrest; he has pleaded not guilty.

Ryan Malone Arrested For DUI And Cocaine Possession
by Paul on 04/12/14 at 08:38 AM ET
Comments (11)
from Damian Cristodero of Lightning Strikes,
Lightning left wing Ryan Malone was arrested Saturday morning on charges of driving under the influence and cocaine possession.
"We are aware of the sitution concerning Ryan Malone this morning," general manager Steve Yzerman said in a statement. "Ryan will not travel with the tem to Washington today, but beyond tht we cannot comment further at this time."
added 1:49pm,
NEW YORK (April 12, 2014) – Bill Daly, Deputy Commissioner of the National Hockey League, today released the following statement regarding Tampa Bay Lightning forward Ryan Malone:
“We are aware of the situation this morning involving Tampa Bay Lightning forward Ryan Malone. Under the terms of the collectively bargained joint NHL/NHLPA Substance Abuse and Behavioral Health Program, Mr. Malone is subject to mandatory evaluation and, if deemed necessary by the Program Doctors, treatment pursuant to the terms of that Program. His future playing status, both in the near term and during the Playoffs, will be determined in accordance the terms of our SABH Program.”

Talking Ryan Malone, Vinny Lecavalier Buyouts
by Paul on 06/25/13 at 03:14 PM ET
Comments (6)
from Damian Cristodero of Lightning Strikes,
Malone and Lecavalier's agent, Kent Hughes, said on Tuesday that they had not heard anything from the team regarding a buyout. But Hughes said, "We understand it's something they might be contemplating. It would be natural to do so."
Added Malone: "It occupies zero of my thoughts. I have no control over it. If they want to buy me out, there's nothing I can do. I would try to prove them wrong. It is what it is."
With more than $60 million in salary cap commitments for 2013-14 and up to five roster spots to fill, Tampa Bay could certainly use the cap relief. Buying out Lecavalier (with seven years, $45 million left on his deal and a $7.727 annual cap hit) and/or the oft-injured Malone (with two, years, $5 million left on his contract and a $4.5 million annual cap hit) certainly would create that.
In Lecavalier's case, it also would relieve Tampa Bay (if Lecavalier retires before the end of his deal) of potential significant penalties under the new salary cap recapture rule.

How About Ryan Malone In Toronto?
by Paul on 01/17/12 at 12:19 PM ET
Comments (6)
from Damien Cox of The Spin,
The fact that the Maple Leafs would love to get bigger up front, well, that’s nice and all. But try to find the players to fit that need.
We’ve talked lots about Ryan Getzlaf, but wanting that big centre and getting him out of Anaheim are two entirely different things.
So Brian Burke may have to set his sights a little lower looking six weeks ahead to the Feb. 27 trade deadline after making big deals to acquire Phil Kessel, Dion Phaneuf and Joffrey Lupul the last three seasons.
Not just a little lower. Also at a financial cost that may be less appealing.
Which brings us once more to Tampa Bay Lightning left winger Ryan Malone, once one of the more highly regarded power forwards in the game, now less of a force for the Bolts, who sit at the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings right now.
The 6-foot-4 winger would, nonetheless, look good in the Leaf lineup. But he’s 32 years old, has only nine goals in 38 games this season and carries a contract that comes with a salary cap hit of $4.5 million the next three years after this one.

Hartnell Discusses Stick Swinging Incident
by Paul on 12/28/11 at 11:17 AM ET
Comments (1)
from Frank Seravalli of Frequent Flyers,
Last night at the St. Pete Times Forum, Scott Hartnell was at the center of one of the most bizarre fights you will see in today’s NHL.
The way Hartnell and Lightning forward Ryan Malone were swinging their sticks at each other, you would have thought one was Dr. Hook from “Slap Shot” and the other was jousting like Racki from the Thunder Bay Bombers in “Youngblood.” It was old fashioned, quick-moving, and puzzling, all at the same time.
The end result was a 10-minute misconduct for each player, with possible supplementary discipline to come today.
It all started during a television timeout with 7:28 to play in the second period. As Hartnell describes it, he was standing at the face-off circle waiting for play to resume when the melee started.
“I was there at the TV timeout, on the left wing, and I was right in front of the bench. Their coach [Guy Boucher] looked up and started yapping at me,” Hartnell told the Daily News. “I was just sitting there, not doing anything. Then, two guys started slashing me from the bench. I just kind of pushed their sticks out of the way. I ended up getting 10 minutes for really nothing. I’ve never seen a coach start yelling at an opposing player from the bench for just standing there.”
Hartnell said he didn’t know what Boucher was saying because he could not understand him.”

Shanahan Explains Non-Suspension Call on Malone
by Alanah McGinley on 10/03/11 at 04:25 PM ET
Comments (11)
“We felt that this hit was the most challenging one so far in this preseason for the Department of Player Safety to evaluate,” said Shanahan. “In the end, we felt that Malone had committed to the hit when Campoli was upright. However, when the contact was made, Campoli’s head position significantly changed just prior to the hit.
“There are elements about the hit that we don’t like – specifically, the principal point of contact being the head and that it was not a full-body check. But the overriding factor in our judgment was that Campoli’s loss of the puck and subsequent bending forward for it just prior contributed significantly, if not entirely, to those elements.”
—Brendan Shanahan via NHL.com
Video footage of the hit previously posted here.
Update 4:41pm ET: via Lightning Strikes, a response from Ryan Malone—
“I already had my mind made up that I was on route to make the hit and he leaned forward a little bit,” Malone said Monday. “I still caught part of his shoulder. ... But that’s a hit you have to make and a guy has his head down. It’s not like I intentionally tried to injure him or anything. It’s a hockey hit. That’s what happened.”

Tampa’s Malone Next Up For Review
by Alanah McGinley on 10/02/11 at 01:30 AM ET
Comments (4)
From Pat Hickey at Postmedia via the Montreal Gazette:
Tampa’s Ryan Malone leveled Chris Campoli with a shoulder to the head midway through the third period. He was assessed a major penalty and a game misconduct…
From Greg Wyshinski at Yahoo! Sports Puck Daddy:
Campoli’s leaning a bit on the play, but hardly leaned into the hit. It’s the kind of check that was legal for the first seven seasons of Malone’s career; not so much anymore.

Imagine That, A Trade Rumor That Doesn’t Make Sense
by Paul on 07/20/11 at 08:51 PM ET
Comments (12)
from Terry Koshan of the Toronto Sun,
Ryan Malone’s name has been linked the Leafs for a few years — back in 2009, there were assumptions that he was going to be acquired from the Tampa Bay Lightning in a deal that would have involved swapping first-round draft picks.
Last summer, there were whispers the Leafs were going to trade defenceman Tomas Kaberle to the Lightning, with Malone going back to Toronto.
Speculation has been floating around the internet that the Leafs might again be interested in the 6-foot-4, 219-pound left winger. But the rumours don’t add up to a lot of sense.
Malone’s salary cap hit is $4.5 million for each of the next four seasons, and he has a no-movement clause in each of the next two years. It’s nice that Malone usually has been a 20-goal scorer when he has been healthy (he had 14 goals in 54 games last season), but that’s a large chunk of change for someone who probably would not be an automatic to play on the top line.

Post-Game Transcript: Tampa’s Malone, Purcell, Coach Boucher
by Alanah McGinley on 05/21/11 at 09:46 PM ET

Q. What happened really in that period? You guys fell in that big hole. There were some turnovers and stuff, talk about what happened there.
RYAN MALONE: We gave them their opportunity there and they capitalized on it. We all kind of talked about that. Obviously eliminate their mistakes and stick with the plan. And all year we’ve been pretty resilient and having kept up with some big goals, and the guys stayed even-keeled, which was very important.
Q. Teddy, take us through your two goals.
TEDDY PURCELL: I was coming off the change on the first one. And Gags and Bugsy did a real good job causing pressure and taking them in. And Gags made a real nice play out to me just kind of faked the shot and just put it on net.
And second one was the same shift. We came down and were putting pressure on them. And we had guys at the net and I don’t think Thomas saw it. I put it on the net and luckily it went in. So it was a good chip for me and it’s one I’ll always remember, that’s for sure.

Canes, Bolts Present Huge Tests for Each Other this Weekend (and a Quick Thought on Boston/Montreal)
by Jon Jordan on 03/25/11 at 12:15 PM ET
Comments (2)
For the Carolina Hurricanes, tonight’s game in Tampa against the Lightning, the first half of a home-and-home between the two clubs, is about picking up two points and doing their part to stay alive in the race for the eighth playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
The ‘Canes trail eighth-place Buffalo by three points as each team prepares for its 74th game of the year tonight, with the Sabres hosting the Florida Panthers.
For the home squad, it’s about picking up the pieces and restoring whatever’s been lost of late. The Lightning have managed just a single regulation win this month and have seen their prolific offense dry up, averaging only 2.18 goals per game in March. Take out last Monday’s six-goal outburst in Toronto and that number shrinks below two – unfathomable, really, for a team that had averaged over three tallies per game not all that long ago.
Tampa Bay’s miserable March has included a quartet of losses to also-rans most recently, falling to Ottawa twice, Florida and the New York Islanders, but tonight, the Lightning will be forced to match the intensity level of a team still very much alive in the playoff race and combat the desperation that comes with so much on the line.
The Lightning aren’t in any real danger of missing the post-season – in fact, with a pair of regulation wins over Carolina tonight and tomorrow, they’ll close the book on that remote possibility outright – but, with their production having plummeted so severely these last few weeks, there’s no doubting the very real threat of an early playoff exit. With nine games remaining on the regular season docket, Tampa has some time to figure things out but, the worse this gets, the harder that will become, meaning the time to put an end to their current struggles is now.

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly: Lightning/Sabres, 2/8/11 (Plus, Isles Goalie Woes and Matt Cooke)
by Jon Jordan on 02/09/11 at 03:41 PM ET

As the second period of last night’s Sabres/Lightning game was nearing a close, anyone trying to get a jump on writing their game story had to feel pretty good about things.
Captain Vincent Lecavalier was putting together a dominant performance, the Bolts had a two-goal lead, goalie Dwayne Roloson looked sharp and entering the third period with a lead has been a near sure thing for this team, 22-1-1 in such a scenario before last night.
Once Thomas Vanek’s 20th goal of the year cut Tampa Bay’s lead to 3-2 with less than two minutes left in the middle frame, however, a not-so-fast vibe filled the St. Pete Times Forum. That Vanek, a notorious Lightning-killer, started the turn of Buffalo’s tides should be no surprise. That the game got as out of control as it did beyond that, though, should be.
And now, the return of The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, with some cameo appearances from other games (so as not to overly depress the Lightning faithful):

Lightning Fall on Long Island as Roloson Shines (Plus, Holiday Greetings from JJ)

The Tampa Bay Lightning came into Wednesday night’s meeting with the New York Islanders with a chance to move into sole possession of first place in the NHL’s Southeast Division.
They left with an overtime loss to the league’s worst team, spoiling a second consecutive solid performance from goaltender Dan Ellis, who stopped 26 saves in defeat.
Dwayne Roloson stood out in goal for New York, turning aside 34 of 35 Lightning shots, John Tavares posted the game-winner and the Islander penalty killers were excellent, neutralizing Tampa Bay with the extra man on five of six opportunities.

After a Loss, Boucher Doesn’t Disappoint
by Jon Jordan on 10/22/10 at 03:25 PM ET
Comments (2)
Last night’s tilt between the New York Islanders and the Tampa Bay Lightning won’t highlight any instructional hockey videos – it was ugly, all-around, really – and the finish was marred by what was probably the longest video review in the history of NHL hockey in October. But, though the 3-2 Islanders overtime victory serves as a shining example that, even in a slop fest like this one, there’s some good and bad to go with some serious ugly, I can’t bring myself to go full G, B & U today. (Tried – didn’t work – onward…)
Instead, some random observations:
***
It’s not as though I’m ever pulling for the Lightning to lose but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t looking forward to the first Guy Boucher post-loss press conference.
I’ve been impressed with Boucher, who seems to have the favorable blend of teacher, tactician and shrink attributes in his bag of coaching tricks, from the start. He’s been intense all the while but he’d led me to believe that after a loss – particularly a poorly-played loss – we’d see a different side and, last night, he didn’t disappoint.

Death, taxes and JJ’s The Good, the Bad and the Ugly…
The alternative to the standard game recap became a staple of my Tampa Bay Lightning coverage last season and it was only a matter of time before it made its season debut here.
Sure, the title of the regular feature has now been copied by a second-rate Bolts blog as of this morning but the content can’t hold a candle to the original and, hell, you’re here with me and they’re, well… They’re sleeping, I’m sure, on Pacific Time and what not… (Lightning coverage from California? Turnaround in Tampa Starts at the Top
by Jon Jordan on 09/20/10 at 10:10 PM ET

Before a single tweak to the roster, the Tampa Bay Lightning were already poised for improvement in 2010-11. With the tumultuous era of previous ownership already behind them when the sale of the team to Jeff Vinik was completed late last season, gone in an instant were any and all off-ice concerns and the circus went back to being an annual visitor to the St. Pete Times Forum rather than a permanent resident. With the appointment of Steve Yzerman as general manager, credibility returned to the franchise and new head coach Guy Boucher was widely regarded as the hottest commodity on the off-season coaching market.
Without a solitary player move, hockey life in Tampa was good again.
But far be it from Yzerman to rest on the comfort that fans surely feel by him simply not being one of those other guys. The addition of former Flyers forward Simon Gagne headlines a list of shrewd off-season maneuvers for the rookie GM and the revamped roster could very well translate to the sort of on-ice success that will make Lightning followers quickly forgot about three non-playoff seasons gone by.

Gagne Gets His Number
by Paul on 09/13/10 at 05:08 PM ET
Comments (4)
from Damian Cristodero of Lightning Strikes,
Nice little story coming out of precamp workouts was how Tampa Bay Lightning left wing Simon Gagne got his No. 12 jersey number from Ryan Malone. It seems Malone just gave it away and, apparently, expected nothing in return. Malone will wear No. 6.
“It showed the class of the guy,” Gagne said Monday after his first skate with his new teammates after 10 seasons with the Flyers. “I heard a lot of great things about him, but by giving No. 12 away that just showed the person he is. I’ll try to buy him dinner on the road this year or something like that. It’s a number I’ve been wearing since I was a kid, so it means a lot to me.”...
After finding out Malone was wearing No. 12, Gagne said he would wear 21, which he wore at the 2002 and ‘06 Olympics in deference to Jarome Iginla. But after Malone spoke to head equipment manager Ray Thill, Gagne got the news Malone was willing to give up the number.
“I said we’re happy to have him on the team,” Malone said. “He’s done some great things with that number and it was time for a change for myself, I thought, so it was no problem at all. I just said with open arms, ‘Come join the team.’ “

Yzerman’s Moves Have Lightning Poised for Marked Improvement
by Jon Jordan on 08/26/10 at 11:51 PM ET
Comments (9)
In these early days of the Steve Yzerman era here in Tampa, the consensus opinion on his re-molding of the Lightning roster has been overwhelmingly positive.
He promised a methodical approach and got to work in just that fashion almost immediately, adding here, subtracting there and strengthening the overall product all the while.
Few onlookers, if any, have been unimpressed.
But what has been done under Yzerman to this point, until on-ice results can be considered, that is, has to be labeled with the age-old, “on paper” caveat.
Essentially, Yzerman has shed some dead wood, plugged a few holes, added much-needed depth in key areas and maybe, just maybe, found the spark to reignite his club’s captain’s once-dynamic career. And before we forget, he’s given the hottest young coaching commodity in the hockey world the task of leading these fortified troops to success.

Southeast Division Statistical Previews by Position: Forwards
by Jon Jordan on 08/09/10 at 12:12 AM ET
Comments (15)
As the new season approaches, I’ll be making an effort to preview the Southeast Division in a slow and steady, comprehensive manner. To kick things off, I thought I’d take a look back at last year’s individual player statistics, updated to reflect this summer’s off-season transactions. (In other words, for example, we’ll group Dustin Byfuglien’s 2009-10 statistics with Chicago alongside his new Atlanta Thrashers teammates and their performances from last year.)
In short, we’ll look at last year’s stats with this year’s rosters, both by division as a whole and by individual teams, broken down by position… Because a look to the recent past can often be a good indicator of what’s to come. (Often… Not always. See: Cheechoo, Jonathan.) And, besides, I don’t know that you’ll find a list like this in too many places (at least I hope you won’t… Cause that would mean I spent too much time on all of this!)
To get things started, we’ll start tonight with the forwards.

Ryan Malone Suffers Broken Right Hand
by Paul on 04/07/09 at 11:44 PM ET

via Erik Erlendsson of Bolts Report,
The Lightning will be without the services of left wing Ryan Malone for the remaining two games of the season after he suffered a broken right hand during the second period of Tuesday’s game against Pittsburgh. It is unclear when Malone suffered the injury, but he left after playing 4:03 in the second period and did not return.
Malone finishes his first season with the Lightning third on the team with 26 goals - one short of his career high - and tied for third with 45 points

from Erin Chenderlin at the Tampa Bay Lightning website,
TBL.com: The Penguins, in just three seasons, went from last in the East in 05-06 to Conference champions this past season. Do you feel the Lightning are on the brink of doing something similar?
RM: I think the East is so close, if you really have a top power play and your special teams are good, those are some big things that can really carry your team. Obviously you need solid goaltending and I think [Mike] Smith and [Olaf] Kolzig are great goaltenders. Like I said earlier, those big pieces are there and they’re bringing in experienced players, so it’s not quite like Pittsburgh where they’re starting out young, but they’re bringing in guys that know how to win and want to win.

Malone & Roberts Officially Signed by Lightning
by Alanah McGinley on 06/30/08 at 11:24 AM ET
Comments (0)
From TSN,
Ryan Malone and Gary Roberts are officially members of the Tampa Bay Lightning, and defenceman Dan Boyle might be the player in the team’s cross-hairs.
Malone has agreed to a seven year, $31.5 million contract, while Roberts agreed to terms on a one year contract that pays him a base salary of $1.25 million plus $10,000 for every game that he plays in the 2008-09 NHL regular season. So if Roberts were to play in all 82 games, he would earn $820,000 in bonuses, which could make his total income for the season $2.07 million.
continued… plus some speculation on Dan Boyle’s future

Report- Bolts Sign Malone and Roberts
by Paul on 06/29/08 at 03:45 PM ET
Comments (0)
via Sportsnet,
A day after trading for their rights, The Tampa Bay Lightning are close to signing Ryan Malone to a long-term year deal that will exceed $30 million and Gary Roberts to a one-year year deal that has the potential to reach $2 million, Sportsnet has learned.
An announcement could come as early as Monday.
Update 3:57pm ET (alanah): From Eric Duhatschek at the Globe & Mail,
...and one source, who doesn’t represent either players, but was monitoring the situation, predicted deals would get done for both players before noon on July 1, when they would otherwise hit the open market.
And Erik Erlendsson of The Tampa Tribune is also monitoring the situation on his blog.
Update 4:30pm ET: From Damian Cristodero at Lightning Strikes,
If things keep going at the current pace, the Lightning could announce contracts for both Ryan Malone and Gary Roberts by later today. If that happens, give the Lightning credit for turning a tide that, for a while, seemed to be going against it.
Update 6:39pm ET: Again, from Damian Cristodero,
Mike Liut, the agent for left wing Ryan Malone, said his client has not signed a contract but a deal with the Lightning “is going to get done. ... I think we’ll finish it today.” That doesn’t mean it will be announced today, of course.
Update 9:29pm ET: The deal is signed, says TSN. Their headline currently reads, “MALONE INKS SEVEN YEAR DEAL WITH LIGHTNING”
Ryan Malone has agreed to a seven year, $31.5 million contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Malone, who would have drawn considerable interest from around the NHL as an unrestricted free agent, will earn between $7 and $8 million in each of the first two years of the deal.

Family Affair

from Aaron Portzline at Puck-rakers,
NHL sources told me on Saturday night that Malone’s father, Greg Malone, has recently been offered a job with the Tampa Bay Lightning. Malone had been working as a scout with the Phoenix Coyotes. Before that, he was a scout with the Pittsburgh Penguins. While he wasn’t fired by the Penguins a few years ago, he was shown the door by management, which is where the relationship between Malone and club became frayed. Now, they could be reunited.

Malone Talk
by Paul on 06/17/08 at 07:40 PM ET

Nick Kypreos was just on Fan590 in Toronto and stated Ryan Malone has been telling people that Columbus, along with Toronto is one of the teams he does not want to play for. Nick feels Columbus is just trying to show an effort to sign a player.
Take it as you wish….
added 9:29pm, As a KK reader pointed out in the comments,
Left wing Ryan Malone said Tuesday he plans to opt for free agency—a significant blow to the Penguins’ chances of trading him for a pick in this weekend’s NHL Entry Draft.
“We will not talk to anyone until July 1,” said Malone, who will become an unrestricted free agent on that date.

from Aaron Portzline of the Dispatch,
After months of planning and strategy, the Blue Jackets’ summer of significant change is nearing the launch pad.
A trade with the Pittsburgh Penguins for the negotiating rights to winger Ryan Malone could be struck today or, more likely, Wednesday, NHL sources told The Dispatch

Ryan Malone Update
by Alanah McGinley on 06/13/08 at 05:09 PM ET
Comments (0)
From Aaron Portzline at Puck-rakers,
Ryan Malone is not going to sign with the Pittsburgh Penguins, unless the Penguins significantly up their offer. It’s looking more and more like the Penguins will get Evgeni Malkin signed to a contract extension and be able to keep right winger Marian Hossa. That will show Malone to the door.
An NHL source said that Malone has been low-balled twice by the Penguins and is ready to leave July 1 as an unrestricted free agent. Malone’s rights could be traded before that day, of course, and the Blue Jackets are a likely destination.
The source said the Penguins have already made the Blue Jackets an offer for Malone’s rights.

Penguins/CBJ Trade Talk
by Alanah McGinley on 06/10/08 at 08:26 PM ET

From Aaron Portzline at Puck-rakers in the Columbus Dispatch,
The Pittsburgh Penguins won’t be able to keep their Stanley Cup runner-up club together because of salary cap issues. It looks like the Blue Jackets are prepared to offer a helping hand.
The two clubs have had preliminary trade talks, the Dispatch has learned. The discussions have involved Pittsburgh trading the rights to one or two of their pending unrestricted free agents—players the Penguins have decided they can’t keep because of the salary cap—to the Blue Jackets for draft pick or player compensation.
It’s unclear who the players are, but Ryan Malone and Brooks Orpik seem like logical choices.

Malone Takes the Breaks in Stride
by Alanah McGinley on 06/04/08 at 03:59 PM ET

From David Shoalts at the Globe & Mail,
“Anyone else in this room would be doing the same thing,” [Ryan] Malone said. “I’m definitely thankful. A broken nose, swollen lip and some chipped teeth are a pretty good scenario for a puck in the face. I look at it as you never know when you’re going to be back in the Stanley Cup final, so you have to do everything you can to help out.”
Actually, Malone’s nose was already broken before Gill’s shot hit him. Red Wings defenceman Niklas Kronwall did that in the first game when he flattened Malone with a bone-rattling body check. When Gill’s shot broke it again, it was practically old hat.
“Yeah, you can get drilled a lot,” Malone said. “You’re standing in front of the net. That’s my job. On the power play, I’ll be back there again.”

Whodunnit?
by Alanah McGinley on 05/26/08 at 08:50 PM ET

From the LA Times,
The Penguins got a rude awakening at their Detroit-area hotel when a fire alarm went off about 1:30 a.m. Monday.
“It was kind of annoying,” forward Tyler Kennedy said. “I just stayed in bed. Worse comes to worse, I’d just jump out the window.”
Kennedy said hotel employees confirmed that it was a false alarm.
“They came out and said it was just someone fooling around,” he said. “Probably was a Red Wings fan.”
Also a note that Ryan Malone is currently sporting a broken nose, courtesy of Kronwall in Game #1

Ryan Malone Today
by Paul on 05/21/08 at 04:51 PM ET
Comments (0)
Ryan Malone participated in an NHL tele-conference today…
Q. Could you sit back and look at the big picture, where this franchise and team was about 15 months ago when it looked like the team might possibly move, the arena deal was difficult to negotiate. Nervous time for everyone in Pittsburgh. 15 months later you’re in the Stanley Cup final, sold out every game, a new rink on the way. Has that been kind of a fun but nervous ride?
RYAN MALONE: A little bit. I think especially being from Pittsburgh, even being with the team early on, when you heard all the rumors about we might be moving, I think deep down inside with the fan support we had at the time, it was great, so it would have been tough to leave such a good hockey town with the support we were receiving at the time.
I think deep down inside we knew we weren’t really going anywhere. For some reason, people were dragging their feet, finally got the rink deal done. It would have been crazy to think at the end of this year we would be going somewhere else.
Definitely great to see. I think you really have to thank the fans for the way they supported us. Had big rallies during that time to make sure we knew they were supporting us. It was great.

Greg Malone: More Than Just Ryan’s Dad to the Pens
by Alanah McGinley on 05/21/08 at 01:11 PM ET
Comments (0)
From Dan Rosen at NHL.com,
If you search hard enough, you’ll still find Greg Malone’s name in the Pittsburgh Penguins media guide. He’s listed in Ryan Malone’s bio as the forward’s father, and in other places showing his season and career stats as a Penguins’ center from 1976-83.
But Greg Malone’s present value to these Penguins extends way beyond any miniscule mention in a media guide. Even though his job title now refers to him as a professional scout for the Phoenix Coyotes, Malone was one of the architects who put together the team that will represent the Eastern Conference in the 2008 Stanley Cup Final starting Saturday [...]
As the Penguins’ head scout from 1990-2006, Malone was at the forefront of every Penguins draft, meaning he had his hand in selecting 11 of the 20 players that should dress for Game 1 against the Detroit Red Wings Saturday at Joe Louis Arena.

Growing Up with the Pens
by Alanah McGinley on 05/15/08 at 06:33 PM ET
Comments (0)
From Pierre LeBrun at the CP via Yahoo! Sports,
Malone’s father Greg also played for the Penguins, which is why Ryan grew up in Pittsburgh. Greg Malone, a New Brunswick native, also played for Quebec and Hartford and is now a scout for the Phoenix Coyotes after many years as a Penguins scout.
So not only did Ryan Malone grow up a Penguins fan, he literally grew up hanging around the team. “You definitely feel lucky,” Malone said. “I would have happily played anywhere but it’s an extra bonus to play for the team I grew up with. I’m privileged.”
Just how long he’ll be wearing that uniform remains to be seen. He’s an unrestricted free agent July 1 and his career-best season, 27 goals and 51 points, would fetch him a handsome raise over the US$1.45 million he made this season. Perhaps as much as $4.5 million on the open market. That will likely be too much money for a Penguins team that is looking to get star centre Evgeni Malkin to sign a rich, new extension this summer…
