I’d Call This An Issue For The Carolina Hurricanes

from Luke DeCock of the News & Observer,

While the NHL gets closer to expansion – Las Vegas? Quebec City? Delay? Nowhere? – and persistent relocation rumors continue to swirl around the Carolina Hurricanes, new drama is developing within the franchise itself.

A lawsuit filed last week alleges Hurricanes owner Peter Karmanos Jr. has defaulted on more than $100 million he borrowed from a trust established for his three adult sons, the plaintiffs, who also allege the trust was used in various ways to “support the Hurricanes.”

If Karmanos has been drawing on his sons’ trust fund to keep the Hurricanes afloat, it certainly makes you question what NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said before Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final.

“Mr. Karmanos has been for some time considering whether to take on a partner,” Bettman said Monday. “There’s no issue relating to the Hurricanes.”

Afternoone Line- Peter Karmanos Jr. On His Relationship With Mike Ilitch

“His (amateur hockey) team was there long before anyone else. He doesn’t get enough credit for that. Grudging respect. ... We just have different philosophies. It’s like oil and water at times. It doesn’t mean it’s bad. We just don’t mix.”

-Peter Karmanos Jr, owner of the Carolina Hurricanes.  George Sipple of the Detroit Free Press has much more from Karmanos including the offer he made to Sergei Fedorov.

United States Hockey Hall of Fame Class of 2013

Here we are in early December and the hockey world, at least the United States hockey world, is already looking to Detroit.

Just under a month away from the Greater Detroit area hosting the largest hockey event in history with the Winter Classic at Michigan Staduim and  the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame is inducting the class of the 2013 right in the heart of Hockeytown.

Karmanos On His Carolina Hurricanes

from Chip Alexander of the News & Observer,

“I’m very optimistic about this year,” team owner Peter Karmanos Jr. said.

In an interview this week, Karmanos talked about this year’s team and its chances in the NHL’s new Metropolitan Division. He talked of the financial resources being used to make it competitive, saying, “We’re not a budget team. We’re a cap team.”

That is, a team willing to spend close to the NHL’s salary cap....

“If I were to sell the team, I’m sure whoever bought it would keep it there,” he said. “The league is resolute in not moving franchises, not after what they went through in Phoenix. Besides, Raleigh is too good a market and it’s growing like crazy.

“But the team is not for sale. As long as I’m breathing I will run the team and try to win another Stanley Cup.”

Morning Line

“I’ve been a hockey fan since my mother turned on an 11-inch Zenith TV in 1951 and I got to watch the third period, (in) black and white, of the Detroit Red Wings playing the Montreal Canadiens. I’ve been fascinated by hockey ever since. When I got old enough to be able to develop hockey programs I did it without hesitation.

-Peter Karmanos Jr., owner of the Carolina Hurricanes, talking after being informed about his induction into the USA Hockey Hall of Fame.  More from Chip Alexander of the News & Observer.

The State Of The Canes

from Chip Alexander of the News & Observer,

Carolina Hurricanes owner Peter Karmanos Jr. was asked to give a “state-of-the-Canes” talk at a Monday luncheon at the RBC Center.

“I’ll tell you about the state of the Canes come next April,” Karmanos said, smiling.

But Karmanos appeared optimistic about his team’s chances this season, adding the Hurricanes had a legitimate shot at making another strong Stanley Cup run “if everything comes together.”

In an interview after the Raleigh Sports Council luncheon, Karmanos talked about the makeup and potential of the team, about the market, about the need to continue to build the Canes’ season-ticket base. He also said an announcement on new team investors likely would be made before the Oct. 7 season opener against the Tampa Bay Lightning.
