Do You Want To See Pavel Datsyuk Back In The NHL?
by Paul on 12/18/18 at 08:13 PM ET
Comments (11)
via Bob McKenzie tweets,
Heard some idle chatter that 40-year-old KHLer Pavel Datsyuk might consider a return to the NHL next season but his agent Dan Milstein says: “Every year we sit down and talk about options but (returning to the) NHL isn’t something he has entertained.”
Datsyuk, BTW, turns 41 in July. ARI currently owns Datsyuk’s NHL rights, until July 1, when he would become UFA in the NHL.

from Pavel Lysenkov of SovSport.ru (Google translate),
Tell me clearly: do you have a purpose to go to Pyeongchang?
I think many have such goals. Of course, I want to get to the Olympics. There will be NHL players or not - no difference. I want to play in Pyeongchang and fight for gold medals.
It is already impossible to change the NHL schedule, all the arenas planned the schedules, not to cancel the "Star Match" in January. Are you hinting that every club will be able to release one or two stars in Pyeongchang?
"On the one hand, there is not much desire to talk about who will be released. Well, not my thing.
On the other - you have to wait for a while, and everything will clear up. I repeat, there is a chance - and the door is not yet closed. I think the parties will be able to agree. But it will happen closer to the New Year.

Video- A Mad Datsyuk
by Paul on 03/13/17 at 04:12 PM ET

via BarDown,
Sunday, with the series tied 1-1 against HC Dynamo Moscow, Datsyuk did something you rarely ever see from him, destroy an opponent with a hit, and the hit actually led to a game misconduct.
Datsyuk racked up 25 minutes in penalties on the one play, and you can see why he was frustrated as he was hit pretty late before exacting his revenge for lack of a better term.
Obviously the game misconduct comes as a shock, especially considering Datsyuk has never had more than 35 total penalty minutes in one season in his career (NHL and KHL).

Sportsnet's Damien Cox and Elliotte Friedman discussed Patrick Marleau being on the trade market, the KHL deciding to make its players available for the World Cup of Hockey, WIlliam Nylander playing well in the AHL for Toronto, Connor McDavid's surgery (no torn labrum or separated shoulder), Pavel Datsyuk returning next Friday or Saturday, Zach Parise's likely status as being out for the month, and according to Friedman, per an NHL competition committee debate, the NHL is considering asking goalies to wear player-sized jerseys and have their chest protectors fit underneath:

Datsyuk Says He Will Play In Opening Game
by Paul on 02/11/14 at 06:17 AM ET
Comments (17)
via Pierre LeBrun of ESPN,
Star center Pavel Datsyuk practiced for the first time Tuesday with Russia and proclaimed himself fit to start the tournament.
"Excellent," the Detroit Red Wings star center told reporters when asked how he was feeling after missing Monday's opening practice.
Then asked on his injury which kept him out about a month with Detroit, he said: "What injury?"...
"Yes. I'll play in the first game," said Datsyuk, who skated Tuesday between Alexander Radulov and Ilya Kovalchuk.
It's clear there's no way Datsyuk would miss a chance to play for Russia in a home Olympics, saying he's been preparing for it "all of my life."
"It's a good feeling," added Datsyuk. "Now, to come back and play in a home Olympics in front of your fans. It's an unbelievable feeling."

Datsyuk Still Out, Olympics In Jeopardy?
by Paul on 02/01/14 at 02:59 PM ET
Comments (3)
from Chuck Pleiness of Red Wings Front,
As for Pavel Datsyuk, it’s beginning to look more and more like his chances of participating in the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, are getting slimmer and slimmer.
“Nope,” Wings coach Mike Babcock said shrugging his shoulders when asked if there was anything new on Datsyuk.
Datsyuk is the captain for Russia.
Asked if he would be back before the Olympics, Babcock said, “I don’t know. I’m just like you. I just keep asking.”

Hate, hate and more hate

That was the hockey world yesterday.
Detroit Red Wings forward Pavel Datsyuk was in his home country of Russia where the highly controversial anti-gay law has been making headlines at least once a day when he was asked about his take on it.
Now from what I have read online no one that is bashing or standing up for Datsyuk was actually there in Russia. I think many, especially the further west in North America we go, were probably still asleep when the question was asked – that didn’t stop anyone from spreading out venom.
At this point every mainstream media, established bloggers and recreational tweeter has expressed their outrage over Datsyuk citing his religion as his answer to a politically driven question.

What If A Team Made A Huge Offer For Pavel Datsyuk?
by Paul on 02/07/13 at 01:44 PM ET
Comments (33)
Would the Detroit Red Wings pull the trigger?
According to Capgeek.com, Datsyuk has a partial NTC (no trade contract) which probably means Datsyuk could supply a list of teams, perhaps around 10, that he would not accept a trade to.
Datsyuk's contract is completed at the end of the 2012-14 season and his cap hit is $6.7M.
What kind of offer would make the Wings think about it, well that's up to you to decide.
So, make an offer for Datsyuk if you think your team would have an interest or if you are a Detroit fan, would you agree to a Datsyuk trade and if you answer yes, what kind of return would you expect? If the answer is no, let me know why.

Hard To Hate Datsyuk
by Paul on 10/01/12 at 03:35 PM ET
Comments (11)
from Chris Lund of The Score,
What follows from this is all players are lumped into a love ‘em or hate ‘em category. Think of the best players in the world. You will find that 99.9999% of them fall well short of a unanimous opinion. Sidney Crosby, Alexander Ovechkin, the Sedin twins, Steven Stamkos, Claude Giroux, etc. Go down the list and it is apparent that there are plenty of human beings who are not ‘avin what these guys are bringin’.
Love ‘em or hate ‘em? Do or do not. There is no try.
I would like to posit, however, that there is one throwback left. The one player left in this generation who we can all agree on. Who we all watch while we sit back and smirk and think “Yeah, this guy. He’s awesome.”
Pavel Datsyuk.
Have you ever met someone with vitriol for Pavel Datsyuk? I haven’t. You get moments where you’ll find an emotionally distraught individual furious that Datsyuk skated through their entire team to tie the game with a minute left and then put their goalie’s jockstrap in Row Q for the shootout game winner, but the narrative never leaves the “Damn him, I want him,” story arc.

from of Puck Daddy,
I spoke to Datsyuk last week about the upcoming playoffs, NHL rules changes, Alex Ovechkin and Alex Radulov, and other League topics. But as you’ll read, our conversations went in many other interesting places, including:
• His early hockey years, including wearing figure skates and a locker room fight.
• The people with whom he’d most like to have dinner.
• The evils of hockey camps.
• His favorite sport other than hockey.
Enjoy.
How do you feel about HBO cameras following you around before the next Winter Classic for their 24/7 show?
I really liked those shows. I didn’t watch all the episodes, but the ones I saw I really enjoyed. And if they follow me around, I just have to be myself. I don’t want to be seen as someone I am not. I am just going to be me, who I am every day. I won’t change for the cameras. If you try to be fake, people will notice it right away.

Datsyuk In The All-Star Spotlight
by Paul on 01/28/12 at 01:05 PM ET
Comments (12)
from Tim Wharnsby of CBC,
Datsyuk does not possess the determination of a healthy Sidney Crosby, nor the goal-scoring touch of a Steven Stamkos, nor the physical game of an Alex Ovechkin, but Datsyuk is considered the best two-way player in the game.
“He’s a great competitor and a guy who always plays hard,” Calgary Flames captain Jarome Iginla said. “He’s extremely skilled. He’s not dirty, yet he’s a fierce competitor.
“He’s one of the hardest guys to knock off the puck or knock off his skates. You wouldn’t know it when you see him in the dressing room. But he’s strong, and with all that skill, that combination makes him one of the best players.”
Another attribute his fellow all-stars admire is Datsyuk’s ability to steal the puck and his eye-hand coordination to knock down passes. When current Chicago Blackhawks forward Marian Hossa, also considered one of the game’s best two-way players, was a teammate of Datsyuk’s in Detroit, the two would often play a must-see game of keep away against one another.
“He’s just one of those players who is special, especially he is sick defensively,” Hossa said. “I think he’s the best in the world at stealing the puck. To watch him is fun. Sometimes when you have the puck and he steals it from you, you just have to laugh because of how easy he made it look.”

Datsyuk In Mourning

from Dmitry Chesnokov of PuckDaddy,
The NHL Media Tour this year involved special events for non-North American media. The League cordially invited us to attend; due to previous engagements we were unable to.
However, Sovetsky Sport’s New York reporters Alexander Klamkin and Alisa Volbidakht did, and forwarded the following interview they had with Pavel Datsyuk, who was unable, quite understandably, to talk about anything but the tragedy in Russia.
Here are some excerpts from their talk with the Detroit Red Wings star about the plane crash that took the lives of Lokomotiv Yaroslavl players and coaches:
Q. We were getting ready for this interview for a week now. Thanks to the NHL for organizing it. We wanted to talk about the upcoming season, about the Red Wings’ chances of winning the cup, about other teams… But none of it will happen because all of the thoughts are with Lokomotiv.
DATSYUK: “That is all correct. I am in a very bad state. I call my friends in Ekaterinburg, talk to them. Every time they tell me all the details of the Yaroslavl tragedy. They give new information… It all stacks up. It puts on a lot of pressure.
“This morning right before our meeting I watched a requiem on YouTube that was organized in Minsk in remembrance of the hockey players who died. It touched me so deep how people reacted to this tragedy, with the kind of respect they remembered [those] people. It touched my soul.

Best Hands in the NHL
by Alanah McGinley on 08/29/11 at 05:52 PM ET

Jamie McLennan at The Hockey News talks about facing Pavel Datsyuk:
Well, obviously Datsyuk had other ideas, because as he got over the blueline, he faked to drive wide, cut hard to the top of the circle, moved laterally as fast as he was going forward, put the puck through the D-man’s stick, faked a pass to a streaking Zetterberg and, in full stride, snapped a ridiculous shot short side shelf that I was way too late to get.
Now, as a goalie, the moment a goal goes in you try to assess what you could have done better, why you didn’t prevent it and how to get better for next time. Obviously, getting beat on a short side glove shot is a no-no in Goaltending 101, but when watching the replay on the JumboTron – and then again later on video – yes, there were a few technical errors on my part. That was when I witnessed how amazing Datsyuk’s hands are. Some things stick out in a goalie’s mind over his career and that goal will be ingrained in my mind for quite some time.
This leads me to my list ranking the best hands in the NHL. There are so many guys to choose from, but that’s the beauty of opinion from experience.
Check out McLennan’s rankings of the best hands in the NHL… starting with, you guessed it, Pavel Datsyuk

from Rory Boylen of The Hockey News,
As Day 1 of the PD13 Hockey School took off Monday, the 80 kids were split into two groups – one of youngsters and one of the slightly older ones.
When asked which day of the camp was his favorite, Datsyuk answered and couldn’t help but show a small piece of his always-joking personality.
“My f…? Day off,” he said with a wry smile and a brief pause. “No it’s the first day, starting day, seeing lots of new kids. It’s new for them and they’re shy, but some kids when they get to their second camp they’re really open and they like it more and more.”

Welcome To Datsyuk’s Camp
by Paul on 07/18/11 at 11:12 AM ET

from Rory Boylen of The Hockey News,
We’re not in Kansas anymore, Toto.
Welcome to the home city of Pavel Datsyuk and, more specifically, the Kurganovo Complex, which sits about 20 minutes outside of town down an unassuming side road lined by open land and small clusters of shanties with makeshift sheet metal fences.
The area itself reminds you of cottage country, with its rough roads, lakes, pines and secluded lifestyle, but it’s a whole other world out here, a whole other continent on the eastern slope of the Ural mountain range. On the drive out from town to the complex, you pass a large marker that represents the end of Europe and the beginning of Asia.
As one of the stewards on the plane we took from Frankfurt to Ekaterinburg said when we told him why we were going to this destination: “That’s a strange place to go for a hockey camp.”

Datsyuk Voted Top Russian In The NHL

from Dmitry Chesnokov of PuckDaddy,
The NHL Awards aren’t until June, but Pavel Datsyuk of the Detroit Red Wings has already won a significant one in hockey. It was announced today that Pavel Datsyuk is the winner of this year’s Kharlamov Trophy — awarded to the best Russian NHL player, as chosen by his peers.
It was the closest vote in quite some time. Fedor Tyutin( of the Columbus Blue Jackets was the last one to cast his vote to ensure that Datsyuk would unseat Alex Ovechkin, who won his fifth Kharlamov Trophy in a row last year.
“The level of play Pavel shows is consistently unbelievably high,” Tyutin said. “When you watch what he does on the ice you get a feeling that there is nothing that Pavel can’t do.”
Alexei Kovalev, who also voted for Datsyuk, said that “he is the most important player for Detroit. When Datsyuk comes back from injuries, the team looks very different.”

from Dmitry Chesnokov of PuckDaddy,
But what exactly is the secret that the Red Wings are amongst the favorites to win the Cup every year?
Well, if I tell you all the secrets, then it won’t be Detroit anymore. Someone else will pick them up and use them. There are secrets and they have to stay within the team.
The main reasons are the management and the atmosphere inside the team. And you also have to look at the work ethic. You can see that we have a lot of older players, but their work ethic is just perfect. You should see the way everyone works in practices, the way everyone is taking care of themselves, the shape everyone is in. Even in the past look at guys like Chris Chelios, Igor Larionov, Nicklas Lidstrom - they are living examples, the role models of what a player should be like. And you want to learn from them.
Do you think Ryan Kesler(notes) will win the Selke Trophy this year? Isn’t it your trophy?
It’s not my trophy. It’s Selke’s trophy.
I think there are quite a few players who can win it. Every player has a chance to win it. Kesler is having a great season and I wish him to continue going this way. But that doesn’t mean I have given up. I am going to keep trying to prove that I am worth it too.

Talking Datsyuk

Scott Burnside and Pierre LeBrun discuss the Pavel Datsyuk injury,
Burnside: The Detroit Red Wings beat the Western Conference rival Vancouver Canucks in overtime Wednesday night, but lost Hart Trophy hopeful Pavel Datsyuk to a broken hand. Tough for the Wings, but if there’s a team that can swallow that kind of loss, it is Detroit.
LeBrun: Scotty, Datsyuk is out four weeks and that’s as big as it gets, a Hart Trophy candidate this season and a player that does it all for the Wings. Yes, they’ve got the depth and veteran experience to overcome, but let’s not sugarcoat it—you just don’t replace his minutes.
“It’s a big loss. He’s one of the premier forwards in the NHL and he was playing real well,” Wings GM Ken Holland told me this morning. “Not one player can replace him, but as a group, we need everyone to chip in and step up in their own way. I thought last night in the third period was a good example. Henrik Zetterberg was huge and other players also dug deep for us.”

The Best Russian Hockey Player
by Paul on 12/21/10 at 08:17 PM ET

from Rory Boylen of The Hockey News,
The best Russian in the NHL today, clearly, is Datsyuk.
Datsyuk beat out Joe Thornton on THN’s all-decade team at the center position – and Thornton had scored the most points of anyone in that 10-year span. It’s not always about points when you’re talking best player, not that Datsyuk lacks in that department. He has been remarkably consistent with seasons of 87, 87, 97 and 97 points in the first four post-lockout seasons. Yes, he did dip to 26th in scoring with 70 points last season (which still ain’t bad), but he led the league in takeaways by an astounding 49 en route to his third straight Selke Trophy. The only other player to win three Selkes in a row is Bob Gainey, who won the first four, and he never scored more than 45 points.
While the argument can certainly be made Datsyuk has better support players than his counterparts, it should be noted the Red Wings have been through a bit of a transitional period themselves. In the past six years, with stars aging and new players coming along, the Wings haven’t missed a step thanks largely to the consistency of players such as Datsyuk.

Video- Datsyuk With The Bullseye Backhand

I just returned from the JLA and it was a great game. The crowd was into the action and Habs fans were sprinkled throughout the rink.
Some of the hockey people I talked to during the game stated Datsyuk made this goal look easy, but in full speed, they marveled at what they witnessed.
added 10:57pm, Same goal, but with Jim Hughson and Craig Simpson of HNIC can be watched below…

IS Datsyuk Hart Worthy?

Pierre LeBrun of ESPN answers some rants from the fans…
My rant involves Pavel Datsyuk and why he’s not considered the most dominant player in the NHL. This past week, I attended a Caps-Canes game in Carolina to see Ovechkin. I have now seen Datsyuk, Crosby and Ovechkin all live, and neither Crosby nor Ovechkin is as dominant all over the ice as Datsyuk. Sure, Crosby and Ovechkin score more goals and points than Datsyuk, but that is only one half of the rink. Every time Datsyuk is on the ice, a buzz goes through the air. He will back-check like a dog and steal the puck away from you….
(LeBrun): I totally agree with you and have always raved about Mr. Datsyuk. Check out what I wrote in the Power Rankings this week. One of the reasons he hasn’t had the same kind of league-wide praise/buzz is because the man doesn’t talk. He’s quiet, goes about his business, and doesn’t attract media attention. I’ve tried to interview him a few times, and while you can tell he’s a very smart man, his actual quotes aren’t of much use. It’s just not this thing. But he deserves to be considered among the top players in the world ... and right now, one month into the season, I’d argue he’s in the Hart Trophy debate.
many more responses to the rants…

Former NHLer’s in Europe Part II
by Phil Davies on 10/31/10 at 02:35 PM ET
Comments (4)
This week we will continue to look at former NHL players who are now playing in Europe.
Jaromir Jagr
Avangard Omsk
Jagr is clearly not the offensive force that he was in his heyday with the Pittsburgh Penguins, but he has become quite a mentor to younger KHL players, while recording 14 points in 19 games for sixth place Avangard Omsk. However, Jagr’s most impressive feat this year was leading an undermanned Czech squad to World Championship gold against a heavily favoured Russian squad that featured Ovechkin, Malkin, Datsyuk and Gonchar.
Miroslav Satan
HC Slovan Bratislava
Satan is hoping to land another midseason NHL contract as he did with the Boston Bruins last year. In the meantime, Satan registered eight points during a three game contract with Slovan Bratislava of the Slovak league. Satan can still find the back of the net and may yet have another crack at the NHL.

JJ’s Three Cheers: 10/09/10

In the debut of the new, daily feature from yours truly, I offer a morning toast to those who deserve as much for their performances of a night ago:
***Cheers to Detroit’s Pavel Datsyuk, for stepping up to Anaheim’s Corey Perry and earning the decisive victory in a scrap last night. He may have taken himself out of the running for the Lady Byng Trophy in this season’s very first game but taking out a bullying Perry, in this instance, was well worth it.

Pavel Datsyuk needed a five minute major for fighting to get the Gordie Howe hat trick. He succeeded when he dropped the gloves against Corey Perry tonight.

The State of Hockey in Russia
by Phil Davies on 10/05/10 at 03:10 PM ET

The Russian National Team has taken great strides towards regaining past international hockey glory in the last few years. Spurred on by back-to-back World Championship victories with two straight wins over Team Canada in 2008 and 2009 (including a win on Canada’s home ice in 2008), Russia had seemed to finally regain their duo-superpower status with their longtime Canadian rivals. That is until the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, where the Russians were soundly thumped 7-3 by the home side in their quarterfinal matchup. Perhaps, Team Russia goalie; Ilya Bryzgalov, summed up the debacle best by stating that Team Canada played like “gorillas coming out of a cage.”
On the heels of their defeat in Vancouver, many of Russia’s Olympic core squad vowed to gain a measure of revenge at the 2010 World Championships in Germany three months later. Although Russia defeated a relatively undermanned Canadian squad, their efforts, once again, ended in failure with an upset loss to the Czech Republic in the championship final.
