Meet Mike Milbury

from Matt Porter of the Boston Globe,

In his garden, he is “Mellow Mike.” He and his family, including nine grandchildren, will soon enjoy the annual summer yield of tomatoes, carrots, cucumbers, bell peppers, tomatoes, green beans, arugula, oregano, and basil from his quiet Needham backyard. All 100 percent organically fed.

When the harvest arrives, he mused, “You know what you’re eating for a few weeks.”...

At the end of July, if all goes according to plan, the NBC hockey team will report to its Stamford, Conn., studio. Milbury expects the broadcast to emanate from there, with drastically reduced staffing and social distancing, though it’s possible they could travel for the conference finals and Stanley Cup Final. NESN commentator Andy Brickley said for as long as the league allows local coverage, he expects to broadcast from Watertown.

“It might be six games a day for the first couple weeks,” Milbury said. “It’ll be nonstop hockey, that’s for sure.”

He doesn’t expect the Bruins to be lagging behind.

“I was talking with [assistant coach] Joe Sacco, and he was saying how their practices are short, and the pace is so high. This group is really good in the gym. They know how to take care of themselves. That’s a big factor.”

Milbury, like his first NHL coach, Don Cherry, is not stingy with his opinions. He is the object of Internet snark, from his time running the “Fish Sticks” Islanders and the infamous MSG shoe incident. If you’re a longtime Bruins fan, you may remember him as a hard-nosed guy from Walpole (and Brighton) who went the whole way in a Spoked-B. In the early ’80s, he also was the lone dissenting voice among players in a battle with powerful agent/NHLPA head Alan Eagleson.

“Mike was never afraid to sell himself,” Rick Middleton said, noting Milbury was one of the first whistleblowers against the later-disgraced Eagleson. “Never afraid to step into an [expletive] storm, and never afraid to open his mouth, whether he could back it up or not.”

Mike Milbury Wants To Stay Old School When It Comes To Analyzing The Game

from Kevin Paul Dupont of the Boston Globe,

Be it in the studio alongside Keith Jones in Stamford, Conn., or in a broadcast booth with the likes of Mike Emrick, ex-Bruins defenseman Mike Milbury is about to embark on his 13th season as part of NBC’s NHL coverage....

The ever-blunt Milbury, 67, fills a more versatile broadcast role than the more narrowly defined life he led on the Boston blue line for a dozen seasons (1975-87), which had him cast in a stay-at-home and slug-it-out role (1,552 penalty minutes in 754 games).

During his tenure with NBC, Milbury has been the guy in the cast most likely to say whatever pops into his head, albeit with a tiny bit more self-restraint and censoring than his ex-coach, Don Cherry, who made a fortune the last 30-plus years as Canada’s premier loose cannon during NHL broadcasts.

For the upcoming season, the NHL plans to mine a massive amount of player data through its new Puck and Player Tracking system. Just how NBC or any of the league’s other broadcast entities plan to integrate the data treasure trove remains to be seen. Milbury sounds like a guy who still would prefer to wrap his hands around an opposing forward’s neck than to, say, dive into a fresh load of numbers about puck possession or speed of the puck as it rockets off a player’s blade.

“I have zero interest in it,” Milbury said this past week, reached by telephone at his home in the Boston suburbs. “I know they’re counting on it, but I’ve made my feelings known. No thanks. I mean, every move measured and calculated . . . what the [bleep] is the fun in that?! I guess I could be wrong, and there’ll be something in all of it that will catch my eye, but..."

Mike Milbury Will Step-In For Eddie Olczyk

from Kevin Allen of USA TODAY,

Mike Milbury makes it clear that he is not replacing Ed Olczyk as an NBC analyst as much as he is holding his place.

He views NBC’s decision to name him as Mike Emrick’s analyst partner while Olczyk recovers from colon cancer surgery as NBC’s way of embracing the NHL-concept of “next man up.” Milbury and Emrick will be together Wednesday, Oct. 4 when the Blues play in Pittsburgh at 8 p.m on NBCSN.

“When you have a problem, someone has to fill in,” Milbury told USA TODAY Sports. “I’m a little nervous about it. It’s not something I’ve done a lot of. But the good news is when you are sitting next to someone as polished and celebrated as Doc Emrick you can just ride shotgun and not worry much. I hope.”

Mike Milbury On The Islanders Move To Brooklyn

from Neil Best of Newsday,

“I always thought it was going to be tough to make it a Long Island-based team with a home base in Brooklyn,” he said Monday in an interview to promote Wednesday’s Rangers-Islanders game on NBCSN. “I had talked to [owner] Charles [Wang] about that and he said, ‘Hey, we’re intent on having the practice facility in Syosset.’

“I thought that sort of defeated the charm of going to Brooklyn. They were leaving Long Island. Their home games are not on Long Island anymore. It’s going to be tough to convince all those Long Island fans to continue to support the team when it’s in Brooklyn.

“I thought that was the better play – but what do I know, it’s not my team or my money – was to make sure it became a Brooklyn-based team.”

Still, Milbury said, in the end “everybody loves a winner” and he likes what he sees from the Islanders in hockey terms.

Mike Milbury On Corey Perry

via Eric Stephens tweets,

Milbury was apparently asked how he would stop Corey Perry. "If I were playing against Corey Perry, I’d probably want to hurt him in (1/2)

(more) some painful and permanent way. And I think most of the rest of the league feels the same way." (2/2)

via Helene Elliott tweets,

Perry on Milbury comment last night: "it's not something that's been taken lightly. If somebody said something about his kid that way (more)

How would he feel?" Milbury had said if he played vs Perry he would " want to hurt him in a painful and permanent way."

I have no earthly idea why Mike Milbury would say what he said other than to be intentionally colorful and controversial. You may not like every element of Sidney Crosby’s game, but he absorbs a lot more abuse than he metes out, competes like hell and has worked extremely hard to fight back against injuries. Concussions, obviously, are no joking matter. All this said, why would Milbury apologize? If you want to go out on a limb, have the stones to stay there. If he said it, he obviously meant it. This post-comment censorship is silly, iike it makes it all better. Unless he was coerced or somehow tricked, stand by your words, man. Why turtle?

Is Milbury An Idiot?

from Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review,

I’m not one for name-calling, as longtime readers can attest. Never have been. So please understand I apply this term here only in the direct spirit of its official Webster definition: Mike Milbury is an idiot.

The definition is “showing foolishness or stupidity.” Decide for yourself …

He’s an idiot if that’s really him giving this interview to Philadelphia’s WIP Radio.

He’s an idiot if he thinks he can be viewed as a serious national analyst on NHL broadcasts after he assails one specific team for the benefit of momentary yucks from the other side.

He’s an idiot if he thinks he can accuse Dan Bylsma of wearing “a skirt” for not engaging Peter Laviolette between the benches Sunday, when Milbury’s most recent violent engagement in public involved being charged with assaulting a 12-year-old boy.

Evening Line

“Little goody two shoes [Crosby] goes into the corner and gives a shot to Schenn. Schenn was late to the party, he should have turned around and drilled him right away, but I guess better late than never.  So you know, Crosby gets cross-checked, big whoop. He said after he came back from his 35th concussion, ‘I’m not going to do this anymore, I’m not going to get into this scrums, I’m going to stay away from that stuff.’ He couldn’t help himself because there’s a little punk in Crosby. He’s not the perfect gentleman. He’s not the sweet kid you see in interviews with his hat pulled down over his eyes. I’d say screw him, hit him.”

Milbury Pleased Charges Against Him Were Dropped

from Martine Powers and John R. Ellement of the Boston Globe,

Moments after a Brookline court official decided against issuing criminal charges against Mike Milbury, the former Boston Bruins player today described the confrontation between him and a 12-year-old youth hockey player as “an unfortunate misunderstanding.’’...

After hearing from police, and witnesses from both sides of the Dec. 9 hockey game, Acting Clerk Magistrate Edward F. Savage concluded there was not enough evidence to bring criminal charges against the 59-year-old Needham resident.

“Well, that’s good that it’s over a couple days before Christmas,’’ Milbury said. “It was an unfortunate misunderstanding…We’re pleased with the court’s ruling.”

Milbury Talks

from Kevin Paul Dupont of the Boston Globe,

In an exclusive two-hour interview with the Globe on Saturday morning, former Bruins defenseman Mike Milbury offered his side of the Dec. 9 incident at a Brookline outdoor rink for which he now could face assault charges.

According to the 59-year-old Milbury, he acted only to break up an on-ice altercation between 12-year-old hockey players, one of them his son, which had him briefly restraining the player from the Everett-based club who was skirmishing with his son prior to a shootout contest.

‘‘I want to be clear about a couple of things,’’ said Milbury. ‘‘No one was punched, kicked or assaulted in any way. I know the ‘Mad Mike’ image that I have and all that. I love the game, I’m passionate about it, but I don’t smack kids around. I grabbed the other kid by the sweater to stop a fight and, yeah, I swore at him. That’s it. That’s what I did…”.

Milbury Charged With Assault And Battery On A 12-Year Old

via WCVB,

A former Boston Bruin and current TV analyst has been charged with assault and battery on a child.

Michael Milbury, who currently works as a hockey analyst for Versus NHL, was accused of assaulted a 12-year-old youth hockey player at the Dexter School Ice Rink in Brookline last week.

Milbury is an assistant coach of a local hockey team, and the alleged victim is a player from an opposing team.

As always, remember there are two sides to a story.

added 12:51pm, from Laurel J. Sweet of the Boston Herald,

The incident allegedly occurred at the end of the Winter Classic between the Boch Blazers for whom Milbury coaches and his son plays forward vs. the Boston Junior Black Hawks. It is alleged that after Milbury’s son and a player for the Black Hawks got into a scrape on the ice, Milbury charged out onto the rink and verbally berated and grabbed and shook the 12-year-old opposing player.

Milbury Will Continue To Do What He Does

from Larry Brooks of the NY Post,

A year ago at the Olympics, there was Milbury—the guy who traded Roberto Luongo, a young Olli Jokinen and the chance to draft either Dany Heatley or Marian Gaborik for Rick DiPietro, Mark Parrish and Oleg Kvasha a year before trading Zdeno Chara and the right to draft Jason Spezza for Alexei Yashin—calling the Russian team “Eurotrash” following a gruesome performance against Canada.

So having a rough go of it against the Bruins, The Sedins are “Thelma and Louise,” according to Milbury. They are women.

If that is the case, we have a pretty good idea who personifies the white trash truck driver whose rig gets blown up.

Boston must be so proud.

So must NBC and the NHL.

Mike Milbury Changes His Tune

From Bruce Dowbiggin at the Globe and Mail:

“You can’t live in a vacuum,” the former NHL player and executive says. “We have seen dramatic changes, and they’ve caused a ripple effect. I think the latest [projected] number is 100 concussions in the NHL this season. I’ve been all for letting it go, but when you see that, you have to sit back and rethink it.”

Call it a recantation. Call it an enlightenment. Long-time Hockey Night in Canada viewers were taken aback on March 5 by his abrupt change of course. Colleague Pierre LeBrun said whimsically: “The wussification of Mike Milbury, never thought I’d see it.”

Citing the number of concussions resulting from the league’s fisticuffs, particularly the staged version, Milbury conceded: “The only reason we have fighting in the game is because we like it.”

What Happens If Milbury Replaces Cherry?

from Cam Cole of the Vancouver Sun,

Here is the sticky part for the CBC, on that day when Mike Milbury inevitably replaces Don Cherry as the voice of bombast on Hockey Night in Canada:

Now that he’s come out on the Saturday night Hot Stove advocating an end to fighting - or at least an end to employment of the 6-foot-8, knuckle-dragging goons who sit on the end of the bench, unable to play actual hockey but waiting to be released from their cages so that they may get their skate-blades wet long enough to bloody someone’s face - what does Hockey Night use for his introductory video?

Islanders’ Perpetual Failure Proves That, Sometimes, You’re Better Off NOT Being a Fan

For someone like me, who has covered the Tampa Bay Lightning for several seasons now, there has never been any shortage of rant-worthy material. The squabbles of previous ownership, atrocious on-ice performances, incessant (and often nonsensical) Vinny Lecavalier trade rumors and the curious case of Brian Lawton, if nothing else, made subject matter for the blog, wherever it has called home, easy to come by.

Starting with Steven Stamkos’ rise to NHL stardom last season and continuing with the breath of fresh air that new Lightning management has been, positive pieces have been writing themselves as well with increasing frequency.

All of this for me, of course, comes without any fan attachment, as I’ve never really had any rooting interest in the team to which I’ve been assigned by default. (I just sort of live here and have been able to eat a meal or two thanks to my hockey-related opinions being entertaining enough for someone to facilitate as much.) Granted, it’s far more pleasant to be around a team when they’re doing well so, maybe somewhere deep down, that’s what someone in my position might prefer but, really, so far as the Bolts go, I’ve always been of the take ‘em or leave ‘em mindset.

Whether they’re winning or not, however, doesn’t change the fact that I’ve grown quite comfortable on this particular beat – far more so, even than my first official go-round at this blogging thing, when I wrote, mostly for fun, about my childhood favorite New York Islanders. You see, I think that might be something that’s always played to my advantage with Tampa – there’s no fan mindset to skew my vision and little emotional attachment to provide any real blinders. (It’s also probably what’s helped find me trouble on occasion but that’s a story for another day.)

JJ’s Three Cheers: 10/10/10

Today’s three cheers for those who deserve as much from their performances of a night ago:

***Cheers to Derek Stepan of the New York Rangers, who burst onto the NHL scene last night with a hat trick in his first career game. Dallas’ Fabian Brunnstrom was the last player to manage three goals in his NHL debut and Stepan became the fourth player in league history to accomplish the feat. That it came against the reigning Vezina Trophy winner in Buffalo’s Ryan Miller, too, makes the performance that much more impressive. If Stepan’s contributions in the early-going are any indicator, New York will fare far better than some of us may have predicted.

“The word predatory does come to mind. And you know, I don’t have any trouble with that. When you’re playing hockey, you’re supposed to finish your checks. I don’t think he meant to give him a Grade 2 concussion. That’s Matt Cooke’s game. He’s supposed to be a guy that finishes his checks, that agitates a little bit, that can play a little bit of hockey. He’s not a slug, But he’s no Sidney Crosby. His job is to make sure he punishes people when he gets the opportunity. Intent to injure? I don’t know. That’s a hard one to pin on anybody. Certainly, ready to finish his check with authority.”

Milbury Shoots From The Lip

via the Star-Ledger,

Moments after Canadian hockey team defeated the Russians 7 to 3 in the Olympic quarter finals, NBC announcer Mike Milbury described the Russian team’s effort as a “Eurotrash game.”

“I’m was really disappointed that these guys came with their, their Eurotrash game,” Milbury said, referring to the Russians. “It was just no heart, no guts, no nothing there to back it up.”

“Did you really say Eurotrash? Did that come out of your mouth?” NBC hockey host Bill Patrick asked, as former NHL star Jeremy Roenick sat stunned between the two men with his mouth open.

“I heard it, I heard it,” Roenick replied, attempting to bail out the situation by agreeing with Milbury’s overall analysis that the Russian team lacked effort in the one-sided loss.

A Battle With Milbury

from Phil at Gunazin.com,

This afternoon I was at the Capitals vs. Penguins nationally televised game, covering it for CapitalsOutsider.com. Following the game, as I was waiting for the elevator, Mike Milbury of NBC walked up close to me. So I figured I could ask him about the comment he made during the 1st intermission, that upset many Capitals fans.

continue if you wish and Phil also had a video camera with him and started recording some of the action which you can watch below.

I don’t think this is going to turn out very good and may shine a bad light on the hockey blogging community, but I do hope it is looked upon as an incident and not reflective of hockey bloggers in general.

Again you can read Phil’s side of the story at the link above and I have my doubts that Milbury will even comment on it, which would be the right thing to do in my opinion.

It Seems Like Yesterday

from Dave Seminara of the New York Times,

When Catherine Kaptain turned on the evening news and saw her son John being struck with his own shoe in a fight with the Boston Bruins, her disdain for the sport her family loved never seemed more justified. “I screamed, ‘They’re beating up my babies!’ ” she said.

Thirty years ago, on Dec. 23, 1979, Bruins defenseman Mike Milbury whacked John Kaptain, a Rangers fan from New Jersey, with a shoe during a bizarre altercation in which all but one Bruins player went over the glass and into the stands at Madison Square Garden. The incident, after a 4-3 Bruins victory, resulted in three players being suspended, lawsuits and the installation of higher glass in the arena. It remains one of the most memorable fan-athlete confrontations in sports.

It all unfolded after Phil Esposito of the Rangers smashed his stick on the ice and skated off to the locker room after failing to convert a breakaway in the waning seconds. When the buzzer sounded, Al Secord, Boston’s rugged left wing, decked the Rangers’ Ulf Nilsson.

Milbury 30 Years Behind In His Thinking

from David Staple of The Cult Of Hockey at the Edmonton Journal,

After the first period of the Edmonton Oilers-Vancouver Canucks game, commentator Mike Milbury of the CBC, who didn’t exactly cover himself in glory as the general manager of the New York Islanders, offered the following to Oilers management:

“They got to find the rats and get them off the ship because in this situation guys will start to reveal their character, guys who don’t want to get hit in the corner, guys who don’t want to play tough and dirty. You might as well get rid of them.”

And exactly how Mr. Milbury, in this age of guaranteed contracts and the salary cap, are you going to do that?

Milbury Keeps Talking

from William Houston of Truth & Rumours,

The problem is, outside of Cherry and also Al Strachan, you are unlikely to hear a Hockey Night commentator criticize anyone in a position of NHL power.

The worst for this is Mike Milbury who is outspoken only in the sense that he passionately defends the establishment. If ever in his TV career Milbury has made a comment that ran counter to the official thinking of the NHL or club officials, we missed it.

He likes fighting and thinks opponents of fighting are girls. He thinks the NHL Players’ Association inflicted the worse atrocity known to mankind by firing executive director Paul Kelly, whom, the guess here, was viewed by the NHL’s hierarchy as the perfect guy to be ensconced as the players’ leader.

Milbury’s toeing the company line, of course, would have absolutely nothing to do with his hope and aspiration of getting back into the NHL as a coach or general manager.

CBC Receives Complaint From Gay Rights Group

from William Houston of the Globe and Mail,

A gay rights group has complained to the CBC about the use of the term “pansification” by Hockey Night in Canada commentators.

Hockey Night commentator Mike Milbury coined the expression to describe how the NHL would be softened should the league heed calls to ban fighting. He has used “pansification” at least twice on Hockey Night this season, in November and again on Jan. 17. His colleague, Don Cherry, has also made reference to it.

Egale Canada, a gay advocacy organization, protested last week. But Scott Moore, the head of CBC Sports, said through a network spokesman yesterday that commentators are free to make their own decisions whether to use the expression.
