An Injured Jake Muzzin Is A Big Loss For The Toronto Maple Leafs

from Chris Johnston of Sportsnet,

To understand how quickly Jake Muzzin became part of the Toronto Maple Leafs fabric, it’s instructive to reflect on his uneasy beginning with the team.

"There’s no question about it: It’s not perfect, it’s what we got," former coach Mike Babcock said, infamously, on Muzzin’s first day with the Leafs a little more than a year ago. He was referencing the imbalance of left- and right-handed shots among the defence corps, but he just as easily could have been talking about how the defenceman felt amid the shock of his first NHL trade.

Those early days in Toronto were tough.

"I was living in a hotel with three dogs and a pregnant wife," Muzzin said recently. "Yeah, there was a lot of s––t going on."

Fast forward to the dark feeling hovering over the team after Wednesday’s announcement that the 31-year-old will be out approximately four weeks with a broken right hand.

The Great 8 In Toronto?

from Kevin McGran of the Toronto Star,

When he suits up Friday for the first time as the Toronto Maple Leafs, Jake Muzzin will wear No. 8.

He used to wear No. 6 for the Kings, a number long retired in Toronto (Ace Bailey) and now one of 13 Leaf numbers out of circulation.

Muzzin will be the 52nd player to wear No. 8 for Toronto (though some, like Bailey and Tie Domi just wore it passing through to other numbers).

But Muzzin has a chance to be the greatest player to wear No. 8 in Leaf history. This is not to put pressure on him. It is to say that as far as numbers go, eight has a pretty low bar.

Jake Muzzin Is A Good Fit For The Toronto Maple Leafs

from Luke Fox of Sportsnet,

Kyle Dubas laid out his plan publicly (defencemen term over rentals), and then followed through, connecting with a hard first swing, with four weeks for another crack before the trading deadline.

We won’t know for certain if the Toronto Maple Leafs rookie general manager’s first major trade since assuming the helm from Lou Lamoriello is a home run until the ball falls, but one couldn’t blame the 33-year-old if he did a bat flip after flossing in his executive suite Monday night.

By swiping Jake Muzzin — arguably 2018-19’s most consistent player from its worst Western Conference team — Dubas not only obtained the best player in the deal but the type of difference-maker that should narrow the gap between the Maple Leafs and their blueprint, the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Muzzin is accustomed to logging heavy shutdown minutes against the top lines in hockey, he can kill penalties (an element coach Mike Babcock has been thirsting for), he’s comfortable chipping in on the power-play (and has three 40-point seasons on his resume), and he’s a zone-exit monster.

LA Kings Send Jake Muzzin To The Toronto Maple Leafs

LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Kings today acquired a first-round draft selection in the 2019 NHL Draft, forward Carl Grundstrom and the reserve rights to defenseman Sean Durzi from the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for defenseman Jake Muzzin.  The announcement was made by Kings Vice President and General Manager Rob Blake.

“We feel this trade was necessary for the future of the organization,” said Blake.  “Moving Jake was not easy as he has been a key player for us and a significant part of our most historic and memorable achievements.  We are grateful for his contributions to the Kings and we wish him the best of luck in the future.”

The Asking Price For Jake Muzzin

from Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic,

There’s no guarantee the Kings will move Jake Muzzin but they’re certainly in listening mode. And the asking price I’m told right now for the talented top-four blueliner is a first-round pick plus a prospect.

It’s a high price but it should be. The 29-year-old is a top-notch defenseman and he’s signed for another season next year at a reasonable $4-million cap hit.

I think contending teams are hoping that the price lowers closer to Feb. 25. But keep in mind, the Kings don’t have the move the guy. They like him, too.

GIF- Jake Muzzin Hit On Boyd Gordon

Muzzin received a five minute major for illegal check to the head and a match penalty.

via LA Kings Insider,

“Whatever they’ve got to do, they’ve got to do,” Muzzin said of potentially facing supplemental discipline. “But I didn’t intentionally go and hit him in the head. I think you can see it, but I didn’t know, obviously, that he was going to drop and take a knee like that.”

Darryl Suter on the hit also via LA Kings Insider,

Muzz’s ass on Boyd’s face. It was a hockey play. It’s not even a penalty. They had their arms up the whole night. It was all penalties. All special teams.

Kings rally in a big way, rely on third period barrage to defeat Hawks

The Los Angeles' Kings' stunning rally from a 2-0 deficit to take a 6-2 decision over the Chicago Blackhawks might be summarized as follows (note the Chicago connection):

Recaps are rolling in presently, but the AP's missive does a fine job of covering the bare bones...

Kings force Game 7 against Ducks via workmanlike win

The other funny thing about hockey on Twitter is that while the East Coasters were focusing on the Lucic-vs-Weise crap, the Los Angeles Kings solved John Gibson, held the Anaheim Ducks to 21 shots, and crafted a Game 7-forcing 2-1 victory on Wednesday evening.

Gibson got beat cleanly by Jake Muzzin, 8:16 into the first period...

But he whiffed big time on this shot by Trevor Lewis, 14:04 into the 2nd...
