Marc-Andre Fleury Has Been The Better Goalie In The Western Conference Final

from David Schoen of the Las Vegas Review-Journal,

Through the first four games of the conference final, Hellebuyck has a 2.81 goals-against average and a pedestrian .897 save percentage.

Fleury’s stats: 2.28 GAA, .930 SP.

“He’s certainly been really good, and he’s made three saves each game that gives their crowd a reason to get on their feet, and rightfully so,” Jets coach Paul Maurice said of Fleury. “He’s made three or four in both of these games (in Vegas). It’s an empty netter in (Game 3) or they’re one-goal games, so that feels like it’s the difference.

“You’ve got to assume that he’s going to get three or four of those a night and find a way to get the knucklers in that we need to have going for us.”

Fleury has come up with timely saves throughout the series, such as his diving stop on Winnipeg’s Mark Scheifele midway through the third period of Game 3 to keep the Knights up by one goal.

In contrast, Hellebuyck was unable to bail out his teammates Friday, as Reilly Smith beat the Jets’ netminder short side for the winning goal with 6:58 remaining.

Connor Hellebuyck Likes His Game

from Donna Spencer of the CP at CBC,

After Winnipeg's 4-2 loss to the Vegas Golden Knights in Game 3 of the NHL's Western Conference final, Connor Hellebuyck said he liked his game better than Knights counterpart Marc-Andre Fleury's.

"He's obviously a big part of that team and playing very well," the Jets goalie said. "But I like my game. I like it a lot more."

The expansion Golden Knights lead the best-of-seven series 2-1 with Game 4 back at T-Mobile Arena on Friday and Game 5 in Winnipeg on Sunday....

When told of Hellebuyck's comment Thursday, Maurice replied "Sweet."

Connor Hellebuyck, it’s time for your close-up.

The Winnipeg Jets are down 2-1 in the Western Conference final to the Vegas Golden Knights heading into Friday’s pivotal Game 4 at T-Mobile Arena and this is the type of moment goalies dream about, having the opportunity to shine when the spotlight is brightest.

It’s not like Hellebuyck is playing poorly in the series, but Golden Knights goalie Marc-Andre Fleury has the upper hand through three games in every statistical category.

The Growth Of Connor Hellebuyck

from Marty Klinkenberg of the Globe and Mail,

“I pulled him five times and he would get mad, but he never lost confidence. Everything he went through prepared him for this season. A year in a goalie’s life can make a huge difference.”

Hellebuyck used the doubt expressed in his ability as motivation in the off-season. He trained hard and came in playing significantly better. He set a league record for American-born goalies with 44 victories in a single season and the stellar play has continued during the playoffs.

The Jets are three wins away from reaching the Stanley Cup final for the first time after beating the Vegas Golden Knights 4-2 in the first game of Western Conference championship series on Saturday night.

“It has been a long journey,” said Hellebuyck, who turns 25 on May 19. “There has been a lot of hours spent and a lot of working hard. I always knew I was better than I showed [last year].”
