from Michael Russo of the Star-Tribune,
More than two decades after honing his picturesque skating style in the rinks of Minnesota, Bret Hedican is hanging up his skates.
Hedican, the former North St. Paul High and St. Cloud State star, will officially announce his retirement today after 17 seasons as one of the NHL’s smoothest-skating defensemen.
“Looking back, I remember [former North Stars and Blues defenseman] Curt Giles saying my first year, ‘Bret, enjoy every day because it’s going to go by really quick,’” Hedican, 39, said by phone from Alamo, Calif., where he lives with his wife (Olympic gold medal figure skater Kristi Yamaguchi) and two daughters. “I remember thinking that’s crazy. Now looking back at my 17 years, man, it flew by. I’m really happy at my career and have no regrets.”

from Dan Wood of Ducks Blog,
Neither Coach Randy Carlyle nor Bret Hedican has unrealistic expectations for Monday night, when the newly obtained veteran defenseman is set to make his Ducks debut against the Columbus Blue Jackets at Nationwide Arena.
Hedican, 38, signed a free-agent contract with the Ducks on Thursday, but has not been in an NHL game since he completed last season with the Carolina Hurricanes. He hasn’t even had the benefit of a full practice session, taking part only in morning skates and pre-game warm-ups Friday and Saturday before games against the Ottawa Senators and Montreal Canadiens.

from Luke DeCock of the News & Observer,
General manager Jim Rutherford said Thursday that Bret Hedican has told the team he’s moving on, and although there’s a chance he could end up back with the Canes at some point later in the summer as a free agent, he no longer figures in their plans at this point.
The 37-year-old defenseman and his wife, figure skater Kristi Yamaguchi, have said they plan to leave Raleigh and move to Northern California.

The boys at AOL Fanhouse are hosting a live-chat today:
Be sure to stop by at 1:00 p.m. this afternoon as we host another live chat session. I’ll be co-hosting along with Ted Starkey, NHL Editor for AOL Sports as we talk to Bret Hedican, currently a defenseman with the Carolina Hurricanes. It’s sure to be interesting, as Hedican won a Cup himself just two seasons ago with Carolina, and he’s been in the headlines thanks to his wife, Olympic Gold Medal winner Kristi Yamaguchi, the current champion at Dancing With the Stars.
Check it out. It starts right away, at 1pm ET.

Hedican Makes It Back

from the News & Observer,
A long offseason of recovery and rehabilitation have paid off, however. Diving in front to block two 5-on-3 slap shots in Toronto, notching a goal and two assists last week en route to posting a gaudy plus-5 against Buffalo, Hedican has convinced himself and his coach that “the old Bret” is back.
And clearly, that’s not another way of saying “too old,” not for a defenseman who ranks second on his team in ice time (19:06) while ranking among the league leaders at a healthy plus-9 for the season.
