Women’s World Championship Coverage On The NHL Network

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The U.S. Women's National Team, which has won the last five IIHF Women's World Championships, will begin its quest for a sixth straight gold medal on Friday (Aug. 20) with a preliminary round matchup against Switzerland at the 2021 IIHF Women's World Championship. Opening faceoff is set for 9:30 p.m. ET. The tournament, which is being staged in Calgary, Alberta, concludes on Aug. 31 with bronze and gold-medal games.

All Team USA games, including tomorrow's pre-tournament contest, will be aired live in the U.S. on NHL Network.

The U.S. roster features 14 players who helped the U.S. capture gold at the 2019 IIHF Women's World Championship as well as 11 players who helped Team USA bring home gold at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in PyeongChang, South Korea. The roster also includes 10 players making their world championship debut.

Joel Johnson (White Bear Lake, Minn.) is the head coach of the U.S. Women's National Team alongside assistant coaches Courtney Kennedy (Woburn, Mass.) and Brian Pothier (New Bedford, Mass.), and goaltending coach Alli Altmann (St. Paul, Minn.).

NOTES: NHL Network will air all Team USA games in the 2021 IIHF Women's World Championship live in addition to all Team Canada preliminary round games, two quarterfinal games, two semifinal games and both medal games. In addition, ESPN+ will carry all other games outside of those on NHL Network ... The U.S. Women's National Team has taken part in the International Ice Hockey Federation Women's World Championship since it began in 1990. The tournament initially took place in 1990, 1992, 1994 and 1997 until it became a sport in the Olympic Winter Games in 1998. Since that time, the IIHF Women's World Championship has taken place annually with the exception of an Olympic year when it is not held and the 2020 season when the event was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic ... Team USA is 76-5-6-8-2 (W-OTW-OTL-L-T) in 97 career games and has outscored its opponents 634-146.
