Winning A Must For Peter DeBoer In Vegas

01/17/2020 at 8:23am EST

from Ed Graney of the Las Vegas Review-Journal,

Breaking: Peter DeBoer didn’t wear a red nose and big floppy shoes in his debut as coach of the Golden Knights on Thursday.

But you can bet there exists a majority of fans who would have thought it a good look.

They certainly will be content with first impressions, the Knights having snapped a four-game losing streak by beating the Ottawa Senators 4-2 at Canadian Tire Centre.

But the part about welcoming a guy with open arms from the most passionate (obsessed?) followers of the Knights will take time, DeBoer having last directed the NHL team that Las Vegas has come to loathe before he was fired by the San Jose Sharks in December.

It was more surreal than anything else, seeing DeBoer wearing a Knights sweatsuit and hat when addressing the media a day after he replaced the fired Gerard Gallant.

from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun,

Getting the Knights back into the playoffs is the biggest demand being made of DeBoer. Vegas was sitting tied for the final wildcard spot going into this game against Ottawa and was only three points out of first place in the Pacific Division lead which is why Gallant’s firing was shocking.

Even DeBoer called his new team “well coached” but understands he must put his stamp on this team to get consistency back. He feels he knows “what buttons to push” to have success in the playoffs, but the No. 1 job is to get there.

“This is a team that the goal is to win the Stanley Cup and they’re one of those teams,” said DeBoer. “We’ve been one of those teams in San Jose the last four or five years. That’s the goal and I can tell you we went to the final with San Jose, I might be mistaken, but December and January we were around .500 and spinning our tires a little bit.
