Wings Had Doubts About Jimmy Howard

from Michael Traikos of the National Post,

Doubts? Sure, there were doubts. Almost everyone within the Detroit Red Wings had them at the some point last summer.

Jimmy Howard, after all, was no longer a kid. He was a 26-year-old goaltender who had spent the last four years toiling in the minors. Even an organization that had prided itself on being patient began to wonder if time had run out.

“I’ll be honest. It was doubtful whether he could play in the NHL,” said Jimmy Devellano, a long-time executive with the Red Wings. “We believe in trying to give everybody maximum time to develop, because obviously when we drafted them we saw something in them. And we try not to rush development.

“But I would say Jimmy Howard took it to the extreme, because generally after four years you really should know. You really should. But we didn’t.”

Anybody who said they didn’t have doubts about Jimmy Howard going into this season is a lying liar.  I’m just glad he played so well for us this year.  The guy seems genuinely likable and it’s hard not to root for him.

Devellano is an amazing hockey mind but he needs to shut his hole more often then not. This is not the shit you say during a playoff run.

Also if the Wings were so down on Howard why did they re-sign him when his initial rookie contract expired??

Lastly Howard played well enough last training camp and preseason to have been brought up to the big club but they had already signed Conklin at that point. When Howard broke his hand in camp it was the excuse the organ-i-zation needed to send him down and use up his last year of two-way eligibility.

I simply do not buy the “we had no idea” statement as they put too much effort into keeping him if he was such a mystery.
