Will Patrick Kane Attend Chicago’s Training Camp?

from Mike Harrington of the Buffalo News,

The NHL is already smartly distancing itself from one of its most prominent players. Kane wasn’t part of Tuesday’s kickoff media tour in Toronto, held annually by the league with national outlets and rights holders. The official word, of course, was that players are rotated and this year’s Chicago representatives were Toews and Conn Smythe Trophy winner Duncan Keith. Riiiiight.

But this year’s tour was moved from New York to Toronto to accommodate Wednesday’s World Cup of Hockey unveiling in Air Canada Centre. No offense to former Chicago teammate Brandon Saad of Columbus, Toronto’s James van Riemsdyk or New York Rangers defense standout Ryan McDonagh, but they’re not remotely close to being faces of USA Hockey.

A guy with three Cup rings is. But that aforementioned trio represented Team USA. No Kane. His absence was plainly obvious and chatter in Toronto was that the league and the team could be meeting with Kane as soon as Monday to make a preliminary decision about camp.

A Chicago Sun-Times column last week said Blackhawks President John McDonough was “volcanically outraged” when news of Kane’s latest misstep surfaced. It also said the team immediately dispatched a high-ranking member of its security corps to Buffalo to do its own investigation.

Here’s hoping the team knows the kind of backlash and distractions it would be up against and says to Kane he’s done for now. And if the team doesn’t, Gary Bettman certainly can.

If he’s formally charged, then I don’t see him participating at all.

If he’s not formally charged, or some sort of civil settlement transpires, then I don’t see why he wouldn’t pick up where he left off.

Maybe it is my own bias as a Wings fan (and thus having it out for the Hawks more than most other clubs), but even before this incident, I didn’t really consider the Kane the face of USA Hockey. He previously punched a cabby. He has shown up consistently in the sports tabloid media every off-season appearing either constantly drunk or being photographed during/after one night stands. Earlier in his career he was largely considered an immature/spoiled/petulant player on the ice, as well.

He’s probably the most talented American-born hockey player in the world today, though that’s not even something you can consider objectively true. Jonathan Quick and Ryan Suter are two of the best in the world at their positions—in fact, I’d argue Quick and Suter are relatively better at their position compared to their worldwide peers than Kane is (that is, Kane is not quite an elite level forward like Crosby, but Suter and Quick are pretty clearly elite level at their positions).

And I hate myself for saying this, but… if the reports about Kessel’s off-season are true… the guy is going to finally play with some high-skill line-mates again. Kane has always had a great center helping carry the load. Kessel with Crosby or Malkin could be downright nasty.

All of this is to say, I don’t take it as a given that USA Hockey fans have looked at Kane as the club’s poster boy, heart-and-soul, most skilled player… any of that. USA Hockey has a lot of good players right now. It always hurts a “brand” to have a player of Kane’s caliber being a total idiot, but he’s been a total idiot for some time now, and USA Hockey is still as big and as good as ever. Fans of all ages, but especially kids, have guys they can look up to and be proud of in Suter, Quick, Parise, and really almost the entire team, outside of Kane.

Who do you consider the “face” of USA hockey?

If I had to pick one guy, it’d probably be Parise. He played at the most fabled prep school hockey programs in North America. He was a Hobey Baker finalist in his only two years in college. Realistically, the only reason he never won the thing is because he went into the draft after his freshman year, and the award usually goes to a junior or senior, because NHL-calibre players have usually moved on to at least the AHL before then (see Dylan Larkin). He won U18 and WJC golds, and was a WJC MVP. He was the team’s best player in 2010 and, considering the heroics of his late goal (in spite of the ultimate loss to a much better team), I’d say that puts him as pretty visible?

Look, I’m sure to many Kane is the face. My main point is that, these sexual assault allegations aren’t some huge plot twist in the narrative surrounding some up-standing face of USA Hockey. He’s had problems around him since pretty much day one (even before he was in the NHL and punching cabbies and showing up totally drunk and half-naked on the internet, the narrative coming out of the draft was, “oh he’s so talented but he’s also very immature, will he ever grow up and be a leader”).
