Who Made The Better Call?

from Justin Bourne of The Score,

I’m a Canadian guy living in the US, so I’m quite familiar with the work of most national broadcasters. I love Bob Cole and Harry Neal (“Great save by…the goalie!”), and usually I love Jim Hughson. Now that I’m in the US, I get a lot of Doc Emrick, who is a whole bunch of fantastic himself (“Waffleboarded into the corner by Brodeur!”).

When Anze Kopitar scored the OT winner in Game 1 it, Emrick owned the moment. You could see the play unfolding, so the announcers had time to get excited as things developed. It’s not as fun when some surprise garbage goal goes in – this one gave us the rising action and the climax.

Jim Hughson’s call on CBC wasn’t exactly electric though. He sounded like a one of the bias broadcasters that sounds openly disappointed when their team gets scored on.

There’s an easy explanation for Hughson’ call.  He is a hard core Canucks fan, I mean beyond…  Kings put out his team, easy to summize he is not going for them.  You could hear the disappointment in his voice.

Though I’d much rather listen to that, than what we had to listen to last year when his team went to the final.  That was hard to take.

It should’ve been harder for Doc to call that given…well…he has always been the Devil’s voice…that said…Hughson…wow.

Doc had the better delivery of the two, for sure.

The whole time though I was playing Gary Thorne’s voice in my head.

At least Hughson got that it was a goal this time. He always does the understated staccato “scores” for his goal call. I didn’t hear much negativity in it as others hear. CBC in general gets dour when there are no Canadian teams left, except with Vancouver, they snipe at them.

The call should have been made in the US by Bob Miller, voice of the Kings.  He’s as unbiased as they come (no, not perfect) and he’s miles better than Emerick.  Its a shame that he doesn’t get to call the Cup Finals.
Honestly, I wish that NBC would let the home team’s play by play guy call the games for the national audience (I know, the game was in NJ so it wouldn’t have been Miller).
