What To Do With Tom Wilson?

from Larry Brooks of the New York Post,

The NHL’s ultimate decision whether and for what duration to suspend Tom Wilson for twice body-slamming Artemi Panarin, who will miss the final three games of the season, to the ice after the Washington recidivist went upside a prone and defenseless Pavel Buchnevich’s head with a sucker punch during a second-period incident at the Garden on Monday will not be a reflection on Wilson, but instead on the league, itself.

This was not only bush-league stuff from this notorious headhunter who has been suspended five times in his NHL career, it was frightening how close his initial body slam of Panarin, on which the Washington winger grabbed a chunk of hair to gain leverage, came to causing calamitous damage.

Had Panarin’s head, rather than shoulder, hit the ice full force, the NHL might be presiding over a death.

This is reckless stuff that is repeated over and over again and is enabled over and over again by the Washington organization. Just as Caps coach Peter Laviolette shrugged off Wilson’s blow that concussed Boston’s Brandon Carlo in early March that earned Wilson a seven-game suspension, the coach did it again after Monday’s match.

I’m in disbelief Peter Laviolette would say “just a normal scrum…happens a lot”

There is now virtually nothing that can be done to his team’s star
players which wouldn’t cross the line. Noted.

Would cross the line

Either the league suspends Wilson indefinitely
(he will never learn, but at least forcing him to miss the playoffs
and leaving his entire NHL career in jeopardy would be a start in terms of appropriate punishment).

If the league doesn’t take those steps as a start,
the Rangers have every right to go nuclear.

Do we need someone to be paralyzed for life or killed on the ice
before the DoPS is jolted into actually taking player safety seriously?
Bettman seemingly only cares about PR and legal liability.
Donald Fehr is MIA.

The league apparently needs a full-on crisis before they will stop with inconsistently parsing technicalities, and then settling on things like a laughable seven games for Wilson again headhunting full force on Carlo. Who hasn’t been seen since.

The funny thing is Wilson plays like he’s afraid of Ryan Reaves when the Caps play Vegas. There are plenty of guys in the AHL who could hurt Wilson and his teammates if that’s the way Laviolette and company want it.

I’d like to see him get 20-30 but knowing the DoPS i’d guess he’s back before the first round of the playoffs are over.

Tarik El-Bashir of The Athletic,

At 9:47 p.m. Monday, the Washington Capitals posted a picture of Tom Wilson on Twitter accompanied by the words, “atCapitals chooses: Violence” with a reference to Wilson living rent-free in the minds of his detractors.

The tweet was in reference to a second-period melee that earned Wilson four minutes for roughing, a 10-minute misconduct and sent Rangers star Artemi Panarin to the dressing room for the rest of the game with a lower-body injury.

The post was deleted about 30 minutes later.

The damage, however, was done.

Twitter was afire, as it often is after a controversial play involving Wilson, the Capitals’ top-line winger and the NHL’s most polarizing figure.

The post drew at least 1,800 quote tweets, 2,400 retweets and 1,500 likes in the short time it was up. Even for an account with 786,000 followers that’s a lot of engagement.

Why was it taken down? The team realized it had made a mistake.

A team official told The Athletic that the tweet didn’t meet the team’s social media standards.

“Living rent free in______ head,” is the lamest, weakest, poorest excuse for a “flex,” and has been since the phrase started getting thrown around.

And a Caps’ official social media tweens twatting that out is even more lame.

Larry Brooks of the New York Post is upset, wow I’m totally shocked!

$5K Fine is the right call, I know many will cry foul, but that is what is warranted here.

Food for thought…  lots of wings fans here, so last Wings game, Namestov took about 2-3 strides and cross checked an unsuspecting Bolt’s player right between his numbers, like he was crossing out the font, square in the middle of his back, it was noticeable because it was so hard it resulted in the guy falling forward, taking a puck off the head, and they stopped play.  This guy was not in the crease, he was smack in the middle of the Ozone, there was no scrum, or board battle, matter of fact, the puck wasn’t even near him, he was just out there in his spot and Namestov just skated up and welted him from behind.

To me, that’s a more vicious than anything Wilson did in this whole scenario outside of the glove on punch that sparked it all, that was absolutely wrong,  glove on or not, but from there, I actually thought.  “Body slam” that Brooks is crying about is more like be tossed him down to the ground, watch wrestling to see what a body slam is.
