Can’t necessarily predict when a team that’s been in contention
in prior seasons for awhile suddenly plunges in the standings.

Doug Wilson is a name you see lauded all the time for bold and
creative moves to keep San Jose near the top.

But given the age of some other key players and Karlsson’s
own age and injury history relative to the term he expected and received,
it just never made much sense to decimate the roster to re-sign that one
splashy but defensively limited defenseman…instead of re-signing your
clutch goal-scoring captain who plays center and leads by example, plus keep more depth or sign another piece that might have helped them contend in the small window they had.

Maybe San Jose will bank a high draft pick, get some rest, and come back in better shape next season. They just seem to cross their fingers their two incumbent goalies will be good enough when it matters. Arizona shows how much two strong goalies can boost a team that isn’t otherwise loaded.

Wonder how much of re-signing Karlsson was about how big a name
and star he was and pressure to follow through on the sunk cost of acquiring him?
Rather than admitting it was worth a shot and was more cost-effective to focus on other players.
