I was with some college classmates in Atlantic City - a friend who graduated played in the house band at Bally’s and we had a free place to stay and free drinks!  A friday night for the guys!  Given that the game was at 5 PM - around 7:40 PM - I called SPORTSPHONE (1-212-976-1313) and Howie Rose (Yes, the Howie Rose who now does the Mets games and former tv lead for the Islanders)  was on that night.  We were all primed up to go out and drink beer and chase women.  So, as part of my personal ‘due diligence’ - I wanted to see how bad we lost to the Russians.  (They had beat us 10-3 the week before at MSG)

So I put my dime into the pay phone and dialed the number.  “In a major upset - final score USA 4-3 over the Soviets”.  I hung up and called again.  Then, I decided to try for a third time.  There was a fellow next to me who - as it seemed - doing the same thing.  “Did you just hear what I heard?”  I asked him - and he said ‘HOLY S**T!”

So I go to our group of about 5 guys and say “Hey guys, we should go watch the hockey game now”  - each of them said “No way!  We are going to get killed - let’s go to the party.  I then said ” No guys, we ought to go watch the game”  That got them annoyed and they said - We want to go to that party - and then I said in a high voice “GUYS!  WE NEED TO GO WATCH THIS GAME - YOU WILL REGRET IT IF YOU DO NOT”  and gave them a look.  Without saying anything else - we found some security guard at a motel across the street with a black and white TV and we all watched it together.  When Mike Eruzione scored - I leaned back on the seat and let out a big sigh.  That said - even though I was the only one in the group who knew the outcome - the last 10 minutes were still earth shattering to me and I already knew the Russkies would not score.  After the game - word got out about the game and the casino patrons started celebrating and singing!  A glorious night !

I watched the Sunday Morning game with about 15 people who worked at Bally’s and that was a nail biter till the 3rd.  It was such a tough time in our country in 1980 - yet - that brought all of us together.

One other question about the ice - did you notice how BLUE the ice was - particularly behind the goal Jim Craig was defending in the 3rd?

I read someplace that the blue was a tint that was making the ice a lighter blue color so it showed better on TV.

I *totally* recall that the Nassau Coliseum did this as well.  As an NYU Student - we used to get cheap tix in the 400 section and I would go when NYI was the visitors and that ice was as white as the driven snow.

Does anyone remember this blue coloring on the ice?  What was the story with that and why did it stop?

After a while - I never saw the blue again.  For about 6 years - when we had no $ and 2 babies - I did not go to many games from 88 - 1995 or so and I did not notice it later.

Nice story Kas…

Here in Detroit, the top TV news guy here come on right before the game and said something like, The US stuns Russia in Olympic Hockey.  The game was broadcast on tape delay and my buddy and I looked at each other and said the TV guy was drinking again.

Sorry for the extra comment - but I was referring to Madison Square Garden with the “white as driven snow” ice, I do not recall them having the same ice tint as did the Coli.

But much like when I used to go to baseball games and the green of the grass just pops when you enter the stadium seats level - the ice ‘pop’ at the Coli in the 80s was less than the Garden’s due to the color of the ice and I seem to recall hearing that it was to make the telecasts better?

For some reason I wasn’t at home and had to miss the live game so I planned to watch the taped delayed version. I warned all my friends not to tell me about it. I was a big hockey and Olympics fan. When I got home I grabbed a beer and settled in to watch the game. The phone rang (pre cellphone era and caller ID), it was my dad. He and I had, since my late teens, a complicated relationship. We didn’t talk much. However sports, especially hockey and Olympics, were a safe haven for us. I answered “Hello?” and I hear from the other end “We beat the Russkies” I was pissed but couldn’t be mad at my dad. He was so proud as an American. It was our safe space.
So I sat down and enjoyed the game. And I gave my dad a silent toast in the air.
