It gets harder and harder for me to watch guys dropping the mitts these days. I’m not advocating for banning fighting. I think fighting is/has/will go the way of the dodo eventually on it’s own, so I don’t think it requires banning it.

I’ve been watching hockey for nearly 50 years, and somewhere I’ve got vhs tape of Probert Vs. Domi that I watched over and over. I used to get enjoyment of guys fighting, but not anymore. Paul Byron is important to the Habs and seeing him wozzy skating off the ice won’t help their playoff chances if he is out due to s concussion.  hmmm

I miss fighting. I got into the game more with a little more ruff stuff. Now its hard to stay awake sometimes.

I’ve lost much of my enthusiasm for even a fair fight, too.

It’s hard to ignore the serious damage that can be done.

The old school punch ups - Probert vs. McSorely - make my head hurt. I dot know how theirs were still attached.

The occasional spontaneous fair fight is still exciting. But mostly it seems the league will maintain a place for fighting, even as it’s gradually phased out, because they are so damn inconsistent at adequately penalizing dangerous plays. Plus some of the worst offenders like Marchand have an owner with pull tilting the scales every time.

This is a weird one as by coincidence(?) Weegar took a bad hit from Byron just a couple months ago.
Byron was suspended three games and his statement was very standup and accountable.

Strangely, he hits Weegar high again and you have to assume Weegar concluded: ok, smaller guy, non-fighter or not, I’ve had enough and am not going to wait around to see what the league thinks.

This doesn’t bother me.  There’s the un-written rules these guys usually go by, and in this case it’s like Byron lost his footing a little and took a couple hard hits.  Nothing really that bad here, and his head didn’t hit the ice.  Looked like Weggar was trying to check on him once he realized Byron couldn’t stand up.

What DOES bother me is the blindside hits to the head, elbows to the head, checks 5 feet from the boards, etc.  That’s dirty and usually much more dangerous.
