Updated at 11:22 PM: According to TSN's Darren Dreger, Pitkanen's out for the year and will miss 3 months due to his injury:
update 10:04pm,
With just under two minutes left in the 2nd period, Joni Pitkanen of the Carolina Hurricanes was in a race for the puck with Troy Brouwer of the Washington Capitals. Pitkanen tried to stop but may have been barely touched by Brouwer or hit a rut in the ice, no matter how it happened, the outcome was not good.
No update on Pitkanen but I will keep you posted as information is released. The Capital did defeat the Hurricanes 5-3 but I am sure Carolina is more concerned about their defensive leader.
I am sure the no-touch icing or hybrid-icing rule which the AHL tested for the part of the season will once again be a topic to discuss.
If you are not familiar with the hybrid-icing it allows the linesman to blow the whistle if he feels the defender would win the race to the puck and if not, he lets the play go.
No-touch icing is if the puck reaches the goal line, icing is automatically called.
