On July 9, 2017, David Poile will mark his 20 year anniversary as Nashville’s GM. This piece looks at Poile’s history, and how his willingness to make heavily scrutinized trades have shaped the current Predators roster.

There were some years there, where about as soon as a good player they’d
developed had choices, they had to move them for what they could get.

They couldn’t seem to attract enough sponsorships or corporate partners for
a while; lots of ownership turmoil. 

Or, as with Peter Forsberg and Paul Kariya, took a gamble at bringing in recognizable
names way past their prime.

But for starting and continuing in a tough, tough spot, Poile has obviously been excellent.

He doesn’t win them all, but it’s hard to think of another GM who has seemingly
won big ones (or at least gotten what his team really needed at acceptable cost) more often than Poile.

He is sort of the anti-Holland. And in spite of his winning so many, other GMs still seem willing
and able to make deals with Poile.

I remember the year the Wings picked Thomas McCollum in the first round of the draft.
Later in that same draft, Poile picked Pecca Rinne.

The best thing that ever happened to Poile and his team was when the owner Craig Leipold sold them and left for Minnesota.
