Tyler Seguin Signs Extension With Boston

via TSN,

The Boston Bruins have locked up forward Tyler Seguin with a new six-year, $34.5 million contract extension.

The average annual value of the deal is $5.75 million per season.

The team made the announcement on Tuesday, just four days before the current NHL-NHLPA labour agreement is set to expire.

This is so stupid.

The PA and Owners are supposedly at odds, yet members of the PA continue to sign extensions with those same owners?

Because the PA is not an entity, it is 600 or so people connected by their careers.  What should Sequin be doing, spitting in the face of the owners?  Or should he instead maybe be an adult who can agree to a contract extension because he personally doesn’t have a problem with the owners of the Bruins?

This extension doesn’t kick in until after this season also.

Seguin’s not confident he’ll be able to get the same extension in a year and the Bruins aren’t confident they’ll be able to get Seguin for this cheap if he’s given another year to flourish.

If I’m doing the math right, this deal (under terms of the current CBA) would run out as Seguin becomes a UFA.

The players and owners aren’t at odds on the concept that individual owners will sign individual players to contracts in order to get paid to play hockey for them in the future. The issues over which they’re arguing are much bigger than this business.

How many 6-yr or longer deals have been signed since the NHL’s “5-yr limit” offer was made?
